Open golf: Frustrated Phil Mickelson hits moving ball with putter

Phil Mickelson makes the cut but not the way you would expect

Doing so is a breach of Rule 14.5 which prohibits a player from hitting a moving ball.

Why a 2-stroke penalty and not a disqualification?

The incident came on the 13th hole of the third round at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. "I'm sure he is going to regret that".

There were initial rumours Mickelson had withdrawn from the event, while the USGA refused to comment on whether the five-time major champion would face any misconduct charges for his behaviour.

When the left-hander eventually holed out, he was 10 over par for the day and +16 for the tournament, while Beef was soon on the same score when he dropped six shots in four holes from the 12th. Mickelson walked away with a 9, later changed to a 10, and will now likely hear from the USGA about "conduct unbecoming", and is probably going to be disqualified. But that was not the immediate case.

Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown breaks her knee cap
The star recently deleted her Twitter account after she unwittingly became a homophobic meme. Other social media users expressed support for Brown, who remains active on Instagram.

It conjured up memories of John Daly hitting a moving ball that rolled off the green during the fourth round of the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst. His second shot didn't even go in. Daly was known for his wild antics and unprofessional demeanor - very much the antithesis of Mickelson. A round that began with fans singing "Happy Birthday" to Mickelson as he walked down the first fairway went off the rails in a very unusual way. Lefty started the day at 6-over, a full 10 shots behind leader Dustin Johnson.

Mickelson has five major championships total, including three Masters, one British Open and one PGA Championship.

According to ESPN, that matched his worst score on a U.S. Open hole as a professional and set a career record for worst score relative to par at the U.S. Open as a pro.

He put together a decent 1-under 69 on Friday to make the cut, but his putter was faulty all week and just never gave him a chance to contend.

Now, it has taken him to infamy.
