Red Cross Missing Types Campaign Encourages Donations

A’s B’s and O’s are missing! Red Cross calls on donors to help

National Blood Donor Week and Missing Type will draw attention in different ways to the need for more blood donors.

The Red Cross wants people to recognize some misconceptions about blood donation as the organization looks for more donors.

What if the letters A, B and O vanished from the alphabet? Join the #MissingType movement and find out your blood type this summer. "This blood is used by every person living in this country who needs a transfusion during an operation or after being involved in an accident", Mlambo says.

"We know that we're not going to be able to keep up with the requirements for the nation's blood supply if that keeps happening", she said. One in two people in Canada are eligible to donate blood, yet only one in 60 actually does. The Red Cross provides around 40 percent of that total.

"When not enough people donate blood, hospital shelves may be empty when a critical patient arrives", Mario Sedlock, director of donor recruitment of the Southern Red Cross Blood Services Region, said. It's not just blood: it's keeping families together. Amelia Iverson needed 61 units of blood after giving birth to her son past year. It was incredibly frustrating and eye-opening for Lily's mom, Susie Dotson. Donors also receive helpful notifications to let them know when their local mobile blood drive has been confirmed in their area. "More blood donors are needed now to fill those gaps". He needs blood, and a lot of it.

NASA rover knocked out as gigantic dust storm envelops Mars
However, a few weeks ago, NASA received distributing news that potentially posed a threat to the "little rover that could". That wind kicks up yet more dust, creating a feedback loop that NASA scientists are still trying to understand.

In fact, for the past four years, new Red Cross donors have declined by about 80,000 each year. It is a challenge blood collection organizations face across the country and around the world.

Refreshments: Donors enjoy snacks and relax before resuming their day. When blood products aren't available in emergency situations or those undergoing lifesaving treatments, patients like Jacqueline Rogers do notice.

6/29/2018: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Bloomington Blood Donation Center, 1600 W. 3rd St.

The campaign aims to highlight stories of people whose lives have been saved through blood donation as a way of motivating regular blood donors to continue giving blood and to motivate people who have never given blood to begin doing so, particularly young people. Since roughly 20% of donors are students from high schools and colleges, the Red Cross is in desperate need.

Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass are encouraged to help speed up the donation process.
