Sanford loses primary to challenger Arrington in 1st congressional district race

John Warren and Henry Mc Master head to runoff

Mark Sanford lost the Republican nomination for his congressional seat to an opponent who attacked his criticism of President Donald Trump.

The President announced his last-minute endorsement of Arrington as the polls neared closing on Tuesday, and also criticized Sanford, who has served the state's First Congressional District in the House of Representatives since 2013.

Before the race was called Tuesday, Sanford conceded before a crowd of his supporters, saying he's "always been a realist" and predicted he would lose once the final vote tally was in. Candidates need more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid the head-to-head runoff.

Arrington, a political newcomer who has held her seat since 2016, spent the campaign blasting Sanford - who had never lost an election - over his lack of loyalty to Trump and attacked him in ads for a much-publicized extra-marital affair with an Argentinian journalist.

South Carolina Republicans expressed their discontent during primary voting Tuesday as President Donald Trump sought to influence the race.

Sanford told aides in 2009 that he was away "hiking the Appalachian Trail" when he was actually in Argentina visiting Maria Belen Chapur, a television reporter who he would later call his "soul mate". "Two years later he votes with Trump maybe 95 percent of the time, 87% percent, says one or two things about Trump that people don't like". He is MIA and nothing but trouble.

Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows, R-N.C., said "I support Mark Sanford" before heading into an immigration meeting with House Republican leadership on Capitol Hill Tuesday afternoon.

Arrington made Sanford's disagreements with Trump a cornerstone of her campaign.

Incumbent Henry McMaster has been forced into a runoff for the Republican nomination in South Carolina's gubernatorial primary. Heidi Heitkamp. She is seeking re-election in a state Trump carried by 36 percentage points in 2016.

Senate Republicans' hopes in Virginia: Sen. Nevada, North Dakota, Maine and Virginia also chose candidates for the midterm election on November 6, when Democrats hope to capture a majority of the U.S. Congress.

Meanwhile, longtime state Rep. James Smith has won the Democratic seat.

In the Second Congressional District, incumbent Republican Rep. Scott Taylor will face the victor of the Democratic primary between former U.S. Navy commander Elaine Luria and schoolteacher Karen Mallard.

In the Seventh Congressional District, incumbent Republican Rep. Dave Brat will face off against the victor of a Democratic primary between former Central Intelligence Agency operative Abigail Spanberger and retired Col. Dan Ward.

Republicans in Virginia are picking between Corey Stewart, who has built his public profile on defending Confederate monuments, state delegate Nick Freitas, the favorite of the Koch brothers-backed Americans for Prosperity and a Rand Paul ally, and minister E.W. Jackson, who has taken a series of hardline conservative positions on social issues.

The Senate landscape will become more settled Tuesday night as well. ME also held the first governor's race in the nation under ranked-choice voting. Tuesday demonstrated yet again just how strong the anti-incumbency mood is among Republican primary voters.

McMaster received the most votes of the four Republicans running, but will face Greenville businessman John Warren in a second contest June 26.

In North Dakota, GOP Rep. Kevin Cramer is a shoo-in to face moderate Democratic Sen.
