Tel Aviv celebrates 20th Gay Pride

250000 Attend Tel Aviv's 20th Pride Parade

Revelers toting rainbow flags flooded Tel Aviv on Friday, June 8, for an annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender parade that Israel played up as evidence of its liberal values amid global censure at its lethal response to Palestinian protests in Gaza.

Cordelia Lange, from Germany, said Tel Aviv is "a very vibrant city, it's a city that embraces everything connected to gays, lesbians and LGBT and I think it's a combination of city at the beach and good vibes".

Earlier this week, the British Embassy in Israel unveiled the design for its float that took part in the Tel Aviv Pride event - which was attended by envoy David Quarrey, who is himself gay.

Numerous streets of tel Aviv were closed at 8:30 in the morning.

The city has been draped rainbow flags all week, illustrating not only Tel Aviv's inclusivity but its awareness of LGBTQ tourists: Many traveled from around the world to specifically for Pride, including Andy Cohen, who made his first trip to Israel to serve as the parade's grand marshal.

The safety of the parade participants provided several hundred police officers and volunteers.

Various artists will perform during the parade, including singers, bands, and drag artists.

The parade was attended by many stars, including victor of "Eurovision-2018" Netta Barzilai.

In 2017, the Tel Aviv Pride Parade was briefly held up when pro-Palestinian protesters blocked the route.

Other Israeli cities are also planning pride parades over the summer, including Jerusalem, where the heavily secured event has grown in recent years.
