Trump Kim summit: North Korea sets out its Singapore agenda

Flight from Pyongyang lands in Singapore ahead of North Korean leader’s arrival

He calls for improved relations and engagement with South Korea, though adds that he has a nuclear button on his desk. But he added, "It looks like the U.S.is no longer a reliable partner in worldwide agreements, and that's bad".

Japan, still unable to meet Kim directly, is relying on Trump for nearly everything from its security to an accounting of its citizens who were abducted decades ago by the North; South Koreans remain skeptical but also embrace hope that a positive outcome of the talks could push forward a Korean War peace treaty and further cooperation; and China, a US rival that is increasing its regional presence, is seeking to continue exerting its influence on North Korea.

With all the global attention focused on Singapore and the historic summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Pyongyang must be buzzing with excitement, right?

Yet both Kim and Trump have come too far to risk any failure from the summit, and Kim's boldness and Trump's disposition as a dealmaker may come together to produce a surprising result, the former officials said.

US President Donald Trump is ready for the historic summit. On Monday, North Korea's state media said the pair would discuss a "permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism" on the Korean peninsula, denuclearisation of the peninsula and other topics of mutual concern. Mr Trump tweets: "This is very good news for North Korea and the World".

"My father would be extremely delighted if they take steps to realise a permanent peace regime, an opportunity he missed by a hair's breadth", said Kim Hong-gul, his youngest son who now heads the Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation, a coalition of about 200 civic groups working on inter-Korean peace.

Trump yesterday declared that the young dictator had a "one-time shot" to bring his country in from the cold with the summit. Using satellite imagery, defector interviews, media reports and other sources, the department found between 182 and 490 detention facilities spread across North Korea. "The world is looking and we can feel proud to be part of it".

However, unless there is a major provocation or resumption of nuclear testing or missile launches by North Korea, strategists and academics say it is unlikely that maximum pressure will ever fully return. Now North Korean officials will nearly certainly emphasize preventing any sudden mishaps in Kim Jong Un's first visit to a foreign country other than China or South Korea since taking power, said Kim Doo-hyun, professor of protection politics at Korea National Sport University.

The demonstrations coincide with Al-Quds Day - or Jerusalem Day - began by Iran to protest against Israeli rule of the holy city. Israel has placed a high priority on eliminating the tunnel threat since Hamas gunmen infiltrated Israel during the 2014 war.

Speaking just before embarking on his marathon journey to Singapore for the pair's historic summit, Trump bristled with confidence as he boasted that contacts between their respective negotiating teams had been positive.

Undergraduate Sher Tay, 20, who chanced upon the event, said: "While I was surprised at how much they resembled the two leaders, I would not pay for a photograph with them".

Kim was greeted at Singapore's Changi airport by Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vivian Balakrishnan.

The talks will focus on reaching an agreement on the denuclearisation of North Korea in exchange for the easing of economic and diplomatic sanctions.

May 26: Mr Kim and Mr Moon meet at a border village in an effort to revive the summit with Mr Trump. "We will be sure to be cost conscious, and we will also be sure that we will do what is necessary to make this a safe meeting", he said.

June 1: After meeting Kim Yong Chol at the White House, Mr Trump says his meeting with Kim Jong Un is back on for June 12.

The talks will take place at the Capella Hotel on the island of Sentosa, a small resort island off Singapore's southern coast.
