Trump Kim summit: United States president lauds deal despite scepticism

US offers 'unique' guarantees to North Korea on eve of summit

Sen. Jack Reed, D-Rhode Island, ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in a statement that Trump "agreed to forgo joint exercises with the South Koreans, which has been a bulwark of our defense policy for decades, without significant concessions like a concrete timeline for denuclearization from the other side".

The joint statement did not refer to a deadline for the dismantling of North Korea's nuclear arsenal, which Japan had regarded as essential, or to the phrase of "complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization". "We're not engaged in any reduction of USA forces talks, and I think we all wait until after this settles and we go forward".

At his news conference, President Trump said it was hard to ensure anything but that he trusted his instinct that Mr Kim would abide by his word.

During the summit, Kim said that North Korea would get rid of its nuclear weapons in return for security guarantees from the US. "President (Barack) Obama said that North Korea was our biggest and most unsafe problem. No longer - sleep well tonight!"

Shares in Butan Industrial dipped further off their recent highs following Trump's get-together with Kim Jong Un, closing around 10% lower.

While saying Trump is "in the lead" on follow-up negotiations, Pompeo said, "I will be the person driving this process forward".

Harris is about to enter the final year of his contract and will earn just short of $15 million next season. Los Angeles now holds the 12th and 13th picks which could, in theory, be packaged to make a move up.

In his post-summit media conference, Trump made the surprise announcement that the usa would halt joint military exercises with its security ally Seoul - something long sought by Pyongyang, which claims the drills are a rehearsal for invasion. South Korea was largely responsible for convincing Pyongyang and Washington to come to the negotiating table.

Mr Trump and Mr Kim planned to meet one on one for most of an hour - joined only by interpreters. In his media briefing in Singapore on Tuesday, Trump mentioned ending the drills, which he described - in language similar to that used by North Korea - as "provocative", saying it would save the the US money. I don't think they are recording it.

In Japan, the prospect of canceled US-South Korean drills was met with concern. Defence Secretary James Mattis' chief spokeswoman, Dana W. White, told reporters he was "in full alignment" with Trump.

Washington has described the drills as defensive in nature, but Pyongyang says they are a rehearsal for invasion and has long called for them to end.

In return, Trump has promised to stop US military drills in South Korea. The next scheduled major exercise, involving tens of thousands of troops, normally is held in August. They also depict Kim greeting national security advisor John Bolton and secretary of state Mike Pompeo. Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono was also scheduled to visit Seoul on Thursday for talks with his US and South Korean counterparts to discuss the summit. Pompeo was slated to fly on to Beijing later Thursday.
