US, Mexico, Canada win 2026 World Cup bid

World Cup 2026: Edmonton likely to host matches, as North America wins bid

The USA, Mexico and Canada have won a joint bid to host the 2026 soccer World Cup.

Mexico has twice hosted the World Cup, in 1970 and 1986. "Our vision is of a world of opportunity for our Candidate Host Cities and for the global football community".

In Edmonton, Mayor Don Iveson's excitement was tempered with realism.

"We still have a great shot though there's more work to do to get to the finish line", Iveson said Wednesday, following news of the winning bid.

The total attendance of 3.6 million spectators remains a record for a World Cup, despite the later expansion in size of the tournament from 24 teams to 32 in 1998.

"England has fantastic infrastructure, experience and everything else so we, as much as we are trying to be neutral now, we will certainly not be neutral if anyone from Europe bids", he said.

Although it would be the first tournament to be hosted by three nations, the vast majority of games will be held in the US.

"The hurdle we need to overcome is provincial support", Iveson said.

Under Trump, relations between the United States, Canada and Mexico have plumbed new lows thanks to disputes in the renegotiation of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement, known as NAFTA, a $1.1 trillion trade pact that ties the three countries' economies together and which Trump has said should be scrapped.

Kim Jong Un ditches personal jet, boards Chinese plane in cat-and-mouse journey
There was also no sign of his sister, Kim Yo Jong, who has accompanied him to Singapore . After that five-day visit, Rodman told reporters, "I'm just trying to open the door".

The city and federal government are already on board with funding the matches. He noted more has to happen before the Alberta capital makes the cut of host cities by 2020.

"[We] are awaiting a more detailed business plan that addresses the financial needs for a bid", Miranda said. That was the only World Cup that Canada's men's team has ever qualified for.

"It's a tremendous day", Shanks told Maria Bartiromo on "Mornings with Maria" on Wednesday. "Commonwealth is an awesome stadium, I love playing there".

That, along with the promise of major revenues from North American sponsors and television networks, was appealing to Federation Internationale de Football Association, an organization that has been beset by global corruption scandals, concerns over exorbitant costs related to previous tournaments, and allegations of widespread labor and human rights abuses around the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. "The moment we started doing well, players were no longer showing up for meals on time; some were eating in their rooms and forgot the qualities that took the team that far". "It's exciting times ahead".

Canada and the United States did not qualify for the tournament. Chicago and Minneapolis also withdrew, citing similar worries. But FIFA President Gianni Infantino suggested the split of games could change.

The World Cup is coming back to America in 2026.

Look for MetLife Stadium to host the 2026 World Cup final.

There is no question that the last four years have been hard for American soccer.
