Wetherspoon replaces French champagne with English wine in run-up to Brexit

Wetherspoons to sell more UK booze before Brexit

The pro-Brexit founder of Wetherspoons announced the pub chain will ditch EU-produced champagne and wheat beers to make way for British and Australian drinks.

"UK consumers have clearly voted it [champagne] its sparkling wine of choice, making the United Kingdom the leading export market for champagne", Mr Peretti said.

Swedish cider Kopparberg makes it past the cull, due to the company's decision to make its cider in United Kingdom after Brexit.

Tim Martin, who founded Wetherspoons and campaigned for Brexit, said the chain was "starting to make the transition to non-EU trade" ahead of Britain's expected exit date of 29 March 2019.

It will also sell fewer wheat beers from France and Germany, replacing them with those made by both United Kingdom and non-EU producers across its 880 pubs from Monday 9 July.

Wetherspoon, which says it has two million customers visiting each week, will replace champagne with sparkling wines from the United Kingdom, such as from the Denbies vineyard, and Hardy's Sparkling Pinot Chardonnay from Australia.

Austrlian Hardys Sparkling Pinot Chardonnay will also appear on the menu.

GETTY BUBBLE BURST Spoons will stop selling champagne in favour of British sparkling wines

Prime Minister Theresa May has promised Britain will quit the group which sets universal import duties when it leaves the EU.

He said that he intends to find a replacement for prosecco from the United Kingdom or new world countries which include Argentina, Australia, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa and the US.

Mr Martin said Wetherspoon sells two million bottles of sparkling wine each year, most of which is prosecco.

His comments came after the chairman of Sainsbury's, David Taylor, the British Retail Consortium and former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg warned Brexit without an European Union trade deal will drive up food prices.

"Champagne has lost market share to lower price sparkling wines", Mr Martin said.

Alcohol-free Adnams Ghost Ship will replace Erdinger alcohol-free beer from Germany.

He added: "I think it's a good idea though to look around the world as we've done with the still wine and it'll work pretty well, especially when we leave the customs union which is a very important point for the British public". He said each of the 650 parliamentary constituencies would receive around £60million.
