World Cup Coming To North America, But Chicago Won’t Host Games

The United bid by Canada Mexico and the United States was awarded the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The joint bid won 134 votes (67%) out of the 203 entitled to vote with Morocco bagging 65 (33%) when voting took place in Moscow on Wednesday, a day ahead of the Russia World Cup 2018.

The 2026 World Cup will look a whole lot different from previous iterations of the tournament, thanks to the fact that it will be hosted by three countries - the United States, Mexico and Canada - and expanded to 48 teams for the first time.

From a soccer standpoint, the venue has hosted major global tournaments recently with the 2014 Women's U-20 World Cup and 2015 Women's World Cup, but they were met with derision from the players over the stadium's artificial playing surface.

For Canada, co-hosting the 2026 tournament will come 40 years after its lone appearance at the men's World Cup.

A successful North American bid would likely also give the Canadian national team an automatic berth into the 2026 tournament.

The plan is that Canada and Mexico would each host 10 matches, while 60 matches would be played in the United States.

The North America proposal, dubbed "United 2026", was an overwhelmingly popular choice amongst Federation Internationale de Football Association nation members as it received 134 votes - significantly more than Morocco's 65 votes. This will be the first time Canada has hosted men's World Cup finals games having hosted the Women's World Cup in 2015.

CONCACAF, the governing body for soccer in North America, Central America and the Caribbean, has seven slots in the World Cup.

England, like Morocco, knows the feeling of falling short in the bid to host the World Cup.

"And in that spirit we wish all Russian hosts and all the teams competing here the very best of luck".

"FIFA could not provide a basic level of certainty on some major unknowns that put our city and taxpayers at risk".

USA soccer president Carlos Corderio said after his bid's success on Wednesday: "It's a bit emotional for us today". Major League Soccer is already well established in the country's three biggest cities and will remain instrumental in developing players, with Canada's most promising rising star now featuring prominently on one of its teams. Kansas City is among 23 cities listed in the bid as candidate cities to host some of the 80 matches that will be played in the three countries over the course of the event. An opening ceremony before the match will feature Will Smith singing Live It Up, the official anthem of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Both the United States and Canada failed to qualify for this year's World Cup.

"This announcement is huge for soccer in the US and maybe even bigger for soccer in Nashville", said Nashville Convention and Visitors Corporation President and CEO Butch Spyridon.
