2nd solar eclipse of the year today

A few weeks after Friday's eclipse on 4 April the third of four ‘blood moon’ lunar eclipses will take place while it is also the first day of spring and the first day of the Jewish religious calendar. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes

All the solar eclipses on Friday the 13th - in 1974, 2018 and 2080 - are partial eclipses.

Total solar eclipses happen because the Sun's diameter is 400 times wider than the Moon's, but it is also 400 times farther away. The Earth crosses the moon and the sun every month as it rotates and revolves around the sun. A majority of this partial eclipse of the Sun will take place over the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Social media is abuzz with speculations about the eclipse, the interest mounts as the eclipse is to occur on Friday, the 13th. The phenomenon will be visible to those who live in south-eastern coast of Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand's Stewart Island and the northern coast of Antarctica.

To avoid eye damage, experts say everyone should wear special solar glasses or use darkened welder's glass when looking at the Sun.

On July 27 the Moon will pass through the Earth's shadow, in the first central lunar eclipse in seven years, which will be visible for 103 minutes.

Game of Thrones racks up 22 Emmy nominations
Some of TV's biggest stars, as well as headline-grabbing shows, failed to get nominations this year. She wasn't nominated for an Emmy in 2017, either.

What is a Solar Eclipse? In partial solar eclipse or "aanshik surya grahan", however, the Moon only partly obscures the Sun's disk. The last solar eclipse of 2018 is likely to occur on 11 August, 2018. Eyewear is not required to look at lunar eclipse.

After the eclipse, many people take a bath to purify themselves and change into fresh clothes.

Scientists and astronomers advise that it is unsafe to see solar eclipse through naked eyes and it can also damage the vision.

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center calculated the eclipse will peak, the so-called greatest eclipse, at 3.02am UT or 4.02am BST. However, in olden days the period of solar eclipse was believed to be an inauspicious event as the main energy providing source sun is not clearly visible. The blood moon is estimated to last over 100 minutes and is expected to cast a larger shadow over the Earth than previously recorded moons. It is expected to occur on July 27-28 at 7.30 pm UTC (12 am IST) and end at 9.13 pm UTC (1.43 am IST).
