All ministers have to sell her Brexit plan

GETTYigel Farage has attacked Theresa May’s Soft Brexit blueprint

Details of the proposals were reportedly submitted to Germany's Angela Merkel before May hashed them out with her own Cabinet at an away-day in the prime ministerial countryside retreat of Chequers.

Gove's decision to back the prime minister was understood to have played a key role in persuading his fellow cabinet Brexiters to agree to the plan, which includes a new customs proposal and a free trade area for goods, although he said the government must also do more to prepare for a "no-deal" Brexit.

An analysis of the Chequers deal circulating within the pro-Brexit European Research Group of MPs was damning about the plan, saying it would lead to "a worst-of-all-worlds "black hole" Brexit where the United Kingdom is stuck permanently as a vassal state in the EU's legal and regulatory tar pit".

He added: 'I am a realist, you should not make the flawless the enemy of the good. "And one of the things about this compromise is that it unites the cabinet".

But in a warning to her foreign secretary Boris Johnson, a leading Brexiteer, she emphasised: "Agreement on this proposal marks the point where that is no longer the case and collective responsibility is now fully restored".

For May, it was a hard-won victory.

It would involve a "facilitated customs arrangement" meant to remove the need for a hard border in Ireland, and the creation of a UK-EU free-trade area, in which the UK would abide by a "common rule book" of EU regulations.

The UK Parliament would be able to refuse to apply new European Union rules relating to the trade of goods.

Appearing on the BBC's The Andrew Marr sShow on Sunday, he said: "I'm a realist and one of the things about politics is you mustn't, you shouldn't, make the flawless the enemy of the good".

A Survation poll released on Saturday night found that 42% of Brits regarded May's proposed Brexit as the "wrong deal for Britain" while 26% said it was the "right deal" for the country.

"(In) all of the important areas where an independent country chooses to exercise sovereignty, Britain will be able to do so", Gove said, adding the plan respected the referendum result to leave the EU.

But there were signs of a backlash among some lawmakers from May's Conservative Party on Sunday, including the party's most visible anti-EU campaigner outside the cabinet, Jacob Rees-Mogg. He said the proposal could be worse than Britain leaving the bloc with no deal.

British Prime Minister Theresa May views a auto on a production line during a visit to the Jaguar Land Rover factory on September 1, 2016 in Solihull, England.

Opposition Labour Party Brexit spokesman Keir Starmer said May's proposal had "fudge written all over it".

He said customs arrangements at the heart of the proposal were "unworkable" and a "bureaucratic nightmare that was not going to work".

He insisted: "Without staying in the EU there will be damage, but actually the single market and the customs union - the full single market and the customs union, the Norway option - is the least damaging part of it".

Environment Secretary Michael Gove - a key figure in the 2016 Leave campaign - defended the proposals on Sunday, calling them a "perfect balance" between the need for close access to Europe and allowing the services industry to diverge from European Union rules and regulations.
