Amazon suffers glitch as Prime Day kicks off

TODO alt text

Monday is Amazon's Prime Day, which means it's the shopping holiday of the summer. Last year the company made £2.6bn out of Prime Day and this year it has been extended for the full 36 hours. Workers in Spain are out on a three-day strike, meanwhile, while in Poland they are staging a work to rule, Verdi said.

It wasn't clear how widespread the outage was on one of Amazon's busiest days of the year, but the hiccups could surely mute sales and send shoppers elsewhere. The sale kicked off Monday at 3 p.m.

This year, when shoppers visited Amazon's website, many were greeted with error messages saying "Sorry something went wrong on our end", and featured photographs of the "dogs of Amazon".

Amazon also faced labor issues. Some people were seeing the "dogs of Amazon" notification that the website wasn't working, while others said they could add items to their shopping carts, but the Prime Day discount price wasn't reflected at checkout.

"There is no doubt that this will erode sales and deter some customers from buying", said Neil Saunders, managing director of research firm GlobalData Retail.

There are tons of other deals across the store for Prime members to take advantage of, and if you aren't a member right now but want in on the action you still have until 3 sign up to the free 30-day trial.

Afghanistan conflict: Civilian deaths hit record high, says UN

Given the worker discontent, the emergence of a new version of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index that named Jeff Bezos as the richest man in modern history was unfortunate.

"Amazon is a fair and responsible employer and as such we are committed to dialogue, which is an inseparable part of our culture", the company told The Register in a statement.

A spokeswoman for the Seattle-based giant said it was committed to providing workers with "positive working conditions".

"We train all year for events like this", Lindsay said.

Hallelujah! Amazon Prime Day 2018 is finally here, and prices are being smashed all over the place. However, Amazon isn't the only retailer looking to cash in on the shopping frenzy. It said deliveries would be unaffected. "But at the same time, these strikes create a moment for consumers to pause and say, 'What's happening here?"

The Amazon effect isn't all bad news for competitors.
