Boris Johnson quits to add to pressure on May over Brexit

May and David Davis

"The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Dominic Raab MP as Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union", a statement from May's office said.

Opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said his departure showed May had not authority left and was "incapable of delivering Brexit".

After many months of rumours that he would pull the plug, David Davis has actually quit as Brexit Secretary. "That's not a tenable position".

After a visit to Downing Street on Sunday he concluded that he had no choice but to walk.

The Prime Minister looks forward to working with Dominic Raab to deliver Brexit.

He told the BBC a contest would take three months and "we physically do not have the time for that" given the United Kingdom is due to leave the European Union next March and both sides want a Brexit deal by October. "It has been worrying the prime minister's advisers from the start".

The BBC's political editor Laura Kuenssberg said Mr Johnson's exit had turned an "embarrassing and hard situation for the PM into potentially a full-blown crisis". Trade Secretary Liam Fox put his name to a newspaper article backing May's plan, and Environment Secretary Michael Gove defended it in a TV interview.

Conservative MP and Remainer Anna Soubry did not refer directly to Mr Davis's resignation, but tweeted it was "not the time for egos, grandstanding and blind ideology".

- Davis campaigned to leave the European Union during the 2016 referendum and was one of three leading pro-Brexit ministers brought back into government by May. He said his resignation was "not imminent" but refused to rule it out.

Meanwhile, some Remain-supporting politicians said the resignation was evidence of the need for a second referendum.

Some Brexit backers cheered Davis on.

Ever since May's botched bet on a snap election in 2017 lost her party its majority in parliament, she has been vulnerable but there are few candidates who could unite her divided party.

The Cabinet agreement on Friday to effectively stay in the single market for goods, and therefore water down any possibility of meaningful trade deals after Brexit, changed all that. "You deserve the final say".

He said there had been a "significant number of occasions in the past year or so on which I have disagreed with the Number 10 policy line".

Sterling rose, as traders bet Davis's resignation would not imperil May and instead focused on the newly-announced deal that markets believe makes a "soft Brexit" more likely.

After a day when the foreign secretary cancelled meetings for crisis talks at his official residence in central London, Johnson made a decision to walk from his job - just hours after May's Brexit minister David Davis did the same in protest at her plans.
