'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' reboot is officially on the way

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Sarah Michelle Gellar

The era of reboots continues apace, and the most recently announced is an absolute doozy: Joss Whedon and Monica Owusu-Breen are rebooting Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The two worked together previously on ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

There's no script as of yet, and details are likely to change, but we do know that Owusu-Breen, the creator of Midnight, Texas, is slated to be writer, executive producer and showrunner.

Although the show has not yet found a network it can call home, 20th Century Fox Television will pitch the new, more inclusive Buffy to streaming and cable outlets later this summer. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the reboot "will be contemporary and build on the mythology of the original". Gail Berman, Fran Kazui, Kaz Kazui, Joe Earley will also serve as executive producers on the TV series.

Whedon has expressed apprehension about making a Buffy reboot in the past, saying, "Luckily most of my actors still look wonderful, but I'm not anxious about them being creaky". Talks reportedly began in the fall of that year; THR notes that Breen's involvement pushed the project to the next stage.

Liverpool boss Klopp bemoans worldwide schedule demands
Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he needed to convince his Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson to take a post-World Cup holiday. We do it differently to Monaco. "I'm going to put my neck on the line and I think they will win".

The original Buffy the Vampire series lasted for 7 seasons on the WB network from 1997 to 2003.

See more Buffy in the video below. Its cast includes Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, Anthony Stewart Head, David Boreanaz, Kristine Sutherland, Seth Green, James Marsters, Marc Blucas, Emma Caulfield, Michelle Trachtenberg, Amber Benson, and Tom Lenk. Like the original series, it will use its monsters and demons as metaphors for issues facing young people.

Whedon, whose take on The Avengers helped to push the Marvel Cinematic Universe into high gear, has undergone increased scrutiny in recent years; his ex-wife, Kai Cole, wrote an open letter alleging years of emotional abuse, and a leaked screenplay for an unproduced Wonder Woman film was roundly criticized.
