Burberry causes outrage for DESTROYING £28 million worth of clothes each year

Burberry said it destroyed unsold clothing bags and perfume to “protect its brand”

Burberry is a coveted British label, famous for their classic trench coats and use of the novacheck print. Probably not, but apparently, the brand is doing just that.

The company burned unsold clothes, accessories and perfume worth £28.6 million (RM151.26 million), according to its annual report, in a practice now common across the industry to guard against counterfeiting.

But the value of the brand's waste is six times higher now than in 2013, with more than £90 million of Burberry products destroyed over the past five years, according to the newspaper.

So why would they do this?

Retailers describe it as a measure to protect intellectual property and prevent products being stolen or sold at discounted prices.

"You can send the message that our products are durable, we've designed them for longevity with craftmanship", she said.

As the BBC reports, Burberry has commented on the wasteful nature of the process, stating that they're making sure their practice doesn't essentially ruin the environment.

In a statement to CNBC, a Burberry spokesperson said: "Burberry has careful processes in place to minimize the amount of excess stock we produce".

Pereira, however, was powerless to keep out Martin's header approaching the hour-mark as United conceded the opener. Mata came closest to scoring in the first half but saw his effort come back off the inside of the post.

The group has said it takes its environmental obligations seriously, and recently joined the Ellen MacArthur Foundation 's Make Fashion Circular initiative to prevent waste in the industry.

The spokesperson said some of the merchandise had to be destroyed due to a deal with USA firm Coty, necessitating the destruction of existing Burberry perfume products.

Of course, environmentalists are not pleased with what's going on.

"The growing amount of overstock points to overproduction, and instead of slowing down their production, they incinerate perfectly good clothes and products".

After consumers flagged to Hotel Chocolat the existence of a Waitrose chocolate bar very similar in design to its chocolate slabs, brand co-founder Angus Thirlwell called for a chocolate "amnesty".

Under the leadership of Bailey the label managed to turn itself around, becoming once-again the luxury label it had lost sight of, seeing share prices rise 729 per cent under Bailey's leadership.

Burberry has destroyed millions of dollars' worth of unwanted luxury products, sparking concern from its shareholders.
