Canada's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops will stay in Latvia for another four years - Trudeau

Trudeau Defies Trump at NATO Meet, Cuts Military Spend

U.S. President Donald Trump listens as he sits beside Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the G-7 summit in the Charlevoix city of La Malbaie, Quebec, Canada, on June 8, 2018.

Canada assumes command of the mission, which will be led by an as yet unnamed Canadian major-general, for one year.

"My message is that we are actually now stepping up", Stoltenberg said.

This marks a continuation of the continuing feud that commenced at the G-7 summit where Trump and Trudeau engaged in a war of words discussing the tariffs being implemented.

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said the Iraq mission is about giving Iraqi security forces the right training so they can "deal with and prevent" the rise of groups, such as ISIS.

Later this morning, Trudeau will head to the new NATO headquarters, where he will be welcomed by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg before joining his fellow leaders for a pre-summit group photo before the formal opening ceremonies, which get underway this afternoon.

Canada also contributes mobile training teams to NATO's counter-improvised explosive device capacity building efforts for Iraq.

"The (Latvian mission) has become a symbol of strength that reminds us that only the commitment and the unity of the alliance will deter Russian adventurism", said Jayson Derow, a research analyst at the NATO Association of Canada.

Trump's "America First" policies have exposed major differences between the USA and many parts of Europe on issues as diverse as climate change, trade and tariff policies, and the Iran nuclear deal that the US leader has rejected.

Iraq army recruits, pictured training in Baghdad, will benefit from a small increase in Australian involvement aimed at deterring Islamic State.

"We are two countries that are more closely integrated on trade and security on people-to-people ties than any two countries in the world". We do have disagreements.

At the same time, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation chief said more needs to be done, and that Canada and its European allies "should not increase defence spending to please the United States", but because meeting the two per cent target is important for their own security and defence.

However the figures were later disputed, with one expert telling CNN the figure was more like 37%, growing to 40% in the next few years - and suggesting that Trump was angling for Germany to buy the United States' more expensive gas. "The reason to invest more in defence is because it's needed because we live in a more unpredictable world".

According to the CBC, Canada will spend 1.23 percent of its GDP on defense in 2018, down from 1.36 percent past year.
