The provincial unemployment rate rose slightly from 6.2 per cent in May to 6.5 last month.

In an estimated labour force of 42,700, there were 39,700 employed and 3,000 unemployed, according to the survey released July 6.

But among all those aged 15 to 24, an increase of 27,000 job-seekers pushed the unemployment rate up 0.6 percentage points from May, to 11.7 per cent. Ontario's unemployment rate stood at 5.7 per cent in May.

Nationally, the jobless rate was also up last month to 6%, from 5.8% in May. The jobless rate in Calgary remained steady at 7.7 per cent.

The Bank of Canada has raised rates three times since July 2017 and Governor Stephen Poloz said last week economic data would decide the next move on July 11. The Bank of Canada says uncertainty over trade tensions between Canada and the United States is one of the biggest potential threats to the economy.

The Canadian economy added a net 31,800 jobs in June on a seasonally adjusted basis, Statistics Canada said Friday. The number, however, did come down from its nine-year high in May of 3.9 per cent.

By sector, the numbers showed goods-producing industries added 46,600 positions in June thanks to job-creation boosts in construction, natural resources and manufacturing. At the same time, employment decreased in accommodation and food services, and in agriculture.

In a separate report Friday, Statistics Canada said the country's merchandise trade deficit with the world widened in May to almost $2.8 billion.

Trump escalated by saying the USA could soon impose tariffs on more than $500 billion in Chinese imports.
