Environment Canada issues statement for the Maritimes about Tropical Storm Chris

LOLA wave model guidance valid on Monday afternoon

Beryl is then expected to weaken, with its post-tropical remnants charting a course for Puerto Rico and following a somewhat similar path through the Caribbean as 2017's Hurricane Maria.

As some East Coast residents gear up for Tropical Storm Chris, New Englanders can rest easy knowing the storm will avoid the area, forecasters said.

Canada's national forecaster says the Maritimes could be in the path of a tropical storm that formed off the USA coast Sunday morning. The storm poses no threat to land, but forecasters expect it to become a hurricane on Monday.

Buttrick said local impacts may include building seas and an increased risk for rip currents, but strong winds and rainfall won't be a concern.

U.S. warships pass through Taiwan Strait amid heightened tensions with Beijing
A USA official confirmed that the destroyers USS Mustin and USS Benfold were the two ships that transited through the waterway. China has boosted its own military presence in the region, sailing its own aircraft carrier through the strait in January.

Now, it's moving west-northwest at 23 mph with 45 mph sustained winds that extend 45 miles from the storm's center, still described as "disorganized".

At 11a.m. Tropical Storm Beryl was located about 130 miles or 210 kilometres northeast of Barbados.

While Tropical Storm Chris is not expected to directly impact land over the next few days, rough surf and unsafe rip currents will continue to impact coastal areas of the Carolinas, mid-Atlantic and the Northeast through much of this week.

But the National Weather Service said Beryl remained on track to move south of the U.S. Virgin Islands and across western Puerto Rico on Monday, potentially bringing 2 to 3 inches (5-8 cm) of rain and gusty winds to the U.S. territory still recovering from the devastation wrought previous year by Hurricane Maria.
