EPA administrator Scott Pruitt resigns

Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt listens as President Donald Trump speaks during a cabinet meeting at the White House Thursday

Pruitt denied the allegations against him in April and has said little of the swirling scandals since then.

Wheeler "has the potential to be just as destructive", said Michael Mikulka, president of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 704.

The reason Pruitt persisted so long is the same reason why his environmentalist foes shouldn't break out the organic Champagne: The administrator was doing exactly what his boss wanted. 'I think Oklahomans still love him, support him and trust him.

"It's one thing after another with this guy", a confidante quoted Trump as saying.

"I am the deputy administrator", Wheeler said.

"It is extremely hard for me to cease serving you in this role", Pruitt's letter to President Trump reads. Pruitt used the letter to lament "the unrelenting attacks on me personally, my family, are unprecedented and have taken a sizable toll on all of us".

Pruitt mechanically praised the President, calling him "brilliant" and a "political revolutionary", in the Post's words.

President Donald Trump praised him until the end, tweeting, "Within the Agency, Scott has done an outstanding job, and I will always be thankful to him for this".

The problems will continue for both men: Pruitt still faces a dozen investigations and must file forms disclosing his income -and his wife's. "That was the position he was originally interested in".

Pruitt, with his ties to big oil and coal, has been an easy target for Democrats and anyone else who opposes special interest ties in Washington DC. Those groups quickly applauded his departure. But it has changed Trump's Cabinet. "We've gotten rid of record breaking regulations and it's been really".

Before taking the job at the EPA, Wheeler worked as an energy lobbyist on Capitol Hill. The Government Accountability Office found that he violated spending laws by installing a $43,000 soundproof phone booth in his office - one of the more than half-dozen federal inquiries launched into his management and expenditures.

He demanded 24-hour-a-day protection from armed officers, resulting in a swollen 20-member security team that blew through overtime budgets and racked up expenses of more than $3 million. Thanks so much to this community for caring about ethics and the environment and signaling to the Trump administration that you were paying attention to the shenanigans the White House tried to hide.

Using his influence to try and secure a Chick-fil-A franchise for his wife.

Pruitt's job had appeared in jeopardy since the end of March, when ABC News first reported that he leased a Capitol Hill condo a year ago for just $50 a night.

Spokespeople for the EPA didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

White House officials had been advising Trump for months to fire Pruitt, according to Bloomberg and The New York Times.

Many Democratic lawmakers and even some fellow Republicans had called for Pruitt's resignation.

Frankly, Pruitt's exit is long overdue.

The path could lead him back to Washington.

The departure follows years worth of constant scandal and public outrage for Pruitt's constant profligate spending and insider dealing. Wheeler spent 14 years working for Oklahoma Senator James Inhofe, the most ardent climate science denier; he's also worked as a lobbyist for the coal industry, reports Mother Jones.

"We see Mr. Wheeler as fitting a very typical pattern of behavior", said Chris Saeger, of the Western Values Project.
