Erdogan vows to advance Turkey under new governance system

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has promised to turn the new executive system in the country into a more efficient government compared to the old system.

Erdoğan took the oath of office in a ceremony in the Grand National Assembly, the culmination of almost a decade of political activism to transform the country's parliamentary democracy into a presidential system.

Erdogan, who is scheduled to announce his new cabinet on Monday evening, said the new ministers would not be members of his Justice and Development Party (AK). "With the power granted to us by the new presidential system, we will get quicker and stronger results".

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim will on Monday go down in history as the 27th and final holder of a post that has existed since Mustafa Kemal Ataturk founded modern Turkey, and whose origins date back to the Ottoman Empire. The opposition described Monday as the day when a partisan one-man regime officially starts ruling Turkey.

Erdogan, who has transformed Turkey by allowing Islam to play a greater role in public life and boosting the country's worldwide stature, will take his oath nearly two years after defeating a bloody attempted coup.

Since taking office in 2003, first as prime minister and later as president, Erdogan has dominated Turkey, tightening his grip over the country of 81 million people as he tamed rival power centres including the military, which toppled some previous governments.

Current Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu could, in theory, continue in his job but reports have said Erdogan may choose his spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin, or even spy chief Hakan Fidan to succeed him.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member Turkey's relations with its Western allies have been strained by disputes with the United States over military strategy in Syria and by European Union criticism of Ankara's large-scale purges of state institutions, armed forces, police and media following the failed coup.

The AKP lost its single-party parliamentray majority in the 24 June elections, winning 295 seats. Erdogan has prevailed in a dozen local, parliamentary and presidential elections.

Inflation surged last month above 15 percent, its highest level in more than a decade, despite interest rate hikes of 500 basis points by the central bank since April.
