Greece To Expel, Ban Russian Diplomats

Vladimir Afanasyev TASS

Greece has ordered the expulsion of two Russian diplomats and barred the entry of two others for allegedly undermining national security, local media report.

A spokesperson for the Greek government said that Greece "will not tolerate anything that violates global law".

In response to Greece's move to expel Russian officials, a spokesman for the Russian foreign ministry told AFP news agency that "Russia will take reciprocal measures, as is usually the case in such circumstances".

Kathimerini said Greek authorities were investigating intrusion into domestic policy issues and quoted diplomatic sources as saying the suspicions were exclusively focused on those four individuals. The sources added that Greece had been cautious about relations with Russia, particularly refraining from following the example of many Western states that had expelled Russian diplomats in the wake of the Skripal incident - a decision welcomed by the Russian leadership.

The World Bank forecasted India as the world's fastest growing economy "as factors holding back growth in India fade". India's GDP reached $2.597 trillion in 2017, while it was at USA $2.582 trillion for France, the World Bank said.

A member of Russia's upper house of parliament, Andrei Klimov, said Russian Federation would expel two Greek diplomats in response, without mentioning Macedonia or going into further detail about the reasons for the actions.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said at the time that while he wanted to "express solidarity" with the United Kingdom, "we also need to be responsible on that issue". They also said that any retaliatory measures that Moscow might take would be useless. "That has also occurred this time", Tzanakopoulos said.

That is because Athens has always been upset FYR Macedonia is too similar to a region in northern Greece called Macedonia.

Last month the two countries signed an agreement that if approved will see FYR Macedonia change its name to the Republic of North Macedonia.
