Los Angeles One killed as man barricades himself in store after shooting grandmother girlfriend

An armed suspect who allegedly shot his grandmother and another person barricaded himself in a supermarket and then shot a woman dead in the United States city of Los Angeles before being taken into custody on Saturday (July 21), police said.

The suspect is now in custody after holding the grocery store hostage for several hours before surrendering to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police were chasing the suspect following a separate incident where he reportedly shot his grandmother seven times and fled in her vehicle. Moore said at about 1:30 p.m. the suspect shot his grandmother and another woman in a South Los Angeles home and then forced the other woman into his grandmother's auto. The suspect led authorities on a chase that ended when he crashed into a pole near the supermarket on Hyperion Avenue in Silver Lake.

"Just as I turned, I heard all these gunshots and I turned around and this auto crashed right in back of me", Kohles said.

Some customers managed to escape the store with help from police and employees. "The situation remains fluid as officers move forward clearing the location", the Los Angeles Police Department wrote on its official Twitter account. LAPD approached the vehicle and rescued one person that was left behind in the pursuit vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to LAPD officials, who said the woman had been "struck by gunfire".

Heavily armed officers in riot gear stood along the side of the store and used mirrors to look inside as hostage negotiators tried to coax the man into freeing his 40-50 hostages and surrendering. Instead, the suspect started firing rounds at officers, Moore said. At the termination of the pursuit, the suspect fled into the Trader Joe's.

Moore said police were able to drag the injured woman to safety but she died at the scene.

Frightened customers and workers dived for cover as police bullets fired at the man shattered the store's glass doors.

The victim was identified as store worker 27-year-old Melyda Corado by her brother, Alberto Corado.

"Officers said they are still processing the scene today and thatHyperion Avenue between Griffith Park Boulevard and Ettrick Street would remain closed until at least noon".

Atkins' grandmother was hospitalized in critical condition after the shooting and police had no update on her condition Sunday. "4-6 people climbed out of a store window". The suspect, who has not been identified, is said to be about 28 years old. But Egland said her grandmother did not want the suspect's girlfriend in the house. Atkins allowed some to leave, and other people sneaked out.
