Israel strikes Gaza after its soldiers come under fire

ISRAEL UNLEASHED: Jerusalem BLASTS TARGETS in Gaza After 'Shooting Incident'

The Israeli Defence Forces said it had launched a large attack on Hamas military targets on the Gaza Strip following "a severe shooting attack against IDF soldiers this afternoon".

Four Palestinians were also killed by Israeli fire Friday, including three Hamas militants, during the Israeli retaliatory bombardment.

Israeli military officials said a "terrorist squad" fired at troops, killing one soldier.

Explosions were seen across the coastal enclave on Friday evening and Israel said three rockets had been fired at its territory, two of which were intercepted.

The soldier was the first to be killed on the Gaza front in active duty since a 2014 war between Israel and Hamas, an Israeli army spokesman said.

"It was a very severe event and one we can not tolerate", said Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus.

KDHE issues West Nile virus warning in northeast Kansas
The Winnebago County Health Department says it has positively identified one mosquito pool as having West Nile virus. They also say the hot, dry weather is a good environment for mosquitoes that spread the virus.

The Gaza Health Ministry said 80 Palestinians were wounded by gunfire in that rally.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held emergency discussions with cabinet colleagues and military chiefs about the escalation, which follows four months of Palestinian border protests. The protests were part of a months-long movement that residents had hoped would draw attention to the Israeli blockade.

They are among more than 135, mostly unarmed, Palestinians killed by Israeli fire since border protests began at the end of March. "IDF troops are on high alert and will continue to operate in order to ensure the safety of Israeli civilians".

Following Friday's clashes, the UN's envoy for the Israel-Palestinian conflict called on all sides to "step back from the brink" of war.

Israel resumed air attacks on Gaza after last week's projectile attacks, warning that it would take whatever action necessary to stop incendiary kites and balloons being flown over the border.

Everyone in #Gaza needs to step back from the brink. "Right NOW! Those who want to provoke Palestinians and Israelis into another war must not succeed".
