Kevin Anderson topples marathon man John Isner in longest ever Wimbledon semifinal

John Isner at Wimbledon

Anderson won the first set 7-6 (8/6) before Isner claimed the next two, 6-7 (5/7), 6-7 (9/11) with the South African claiming the fourth 6-4 to level the semi-final.

Anderson also played an extended fifth set in the quarterfinals, eliminating eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer 13-11 in the final set.

An Isner ace fittingly concluded the 12 games in the first, before Anderson recovered from a mini-break down to take a one-set lead after an hour and three minutes.

Anderson had landed on his back giving a return from the baseline, losing his racquet in the process. The Swiss was heading into the meeting as a favourite, he had not lost any set in his first four matches of the tournament.

Anderson then decisively broke the American in the 49th game of the final set, and held his serve to take it 26-24 and set up a final with either Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic.

After watching Isner strike a tired forehand wide, Anderson advanced to the Wimbledon final at the 10th time of asking.

China rises, US falls in global innovation index
A higher ranking in the report means better economic development and richer innovation-prone environments. The top 10 innovative economies also include Britain, Singapore, Finland, Denmark , Germany and Ireland.

Anderson and Isner's main strength is their service game, which was pretty apparent given that three sets went to a tie-break.

In a matchup of two of the tallest (Isner at 6 feet, 10 inches, Anderson at 6-8) and biggest-serving players on the ATP tour, Isner and Anderson expectedly played tiebreaks in each of the first three sets.

As it became clear that Isner was due for another endless fifth set, tennis fans were far from delighted.

Isner did, however, break the record of the most serves at a tournament - beating Goran Ivanisevic's 213 on his way to the Wimbledon back in 2001.

Nadal, the 2008 and 2010 champion, trails Djokovic, the 2011, 2014 and 2015 victor, 26-25 in a rivalry which began at Roland Garros 12 years ago.

And another all-time great awaits him on Sunday in either Nadal or Djokovic. For us to be out there for that length of time.
