Last remaining kid, coach evacuated from Thai cave

Rescue personnel prepare the transport for the evacuation of the boys and their football coach trapped in a flooded cave in Chiang Rai

The 12 boys and their coach who were saved from a cave in northern Thailand are doing well mentally and physically, a Thai health official has said, amid an outpouring of gratitude for those involved in their rescue. "We are not sure if this is a miracle, a science, or what". A high-risk global mission ensued and the group was eventually rescued.

In a press conference on Wednesday evening, the Thai Navy SEALs chief said the decision to evacuate the cave was based on both the threat of rising floodwaters and oxygen depletion in the cave where the boys were sheltering.

He said that the medics will stay on at the cave site for one or two days to check on the health of rescue workers or volunteers.

"Of course he was extremely happy", Vaessen said.

"Most caves naturally breathe", says Anmar Mirza, national co-ordinator of the US National Cave Rescue Commission.

The group had entered the sprawling Tham Luang cave to go exploring after soccer practice on June 23, but monsoon rains soon filled the tight passageways, blocking their escape.

Thailand's decision to dive the boys out despite their weak condition and lack of diving experience was made when a window of opportunity was provided by relatively mild weather.

Prayuth gave a televised national address Wednesday, saying the government's efforts, the assistance of people in Thailand and overseas, and the outpouring of moral support made the mission a success.

"The important thing is. personal space", Prayuth told reporters. This mission was successful because of cooperation from everyone.

The aim, Anderson said, was to make each of the boys "tightly packaged" so divers could keep control of them and adjust their air supply as needed.

They spent nine harrowing days trapped in darkness until two British divers found them, looking gaunt but otherwise offering smiles to the divers and appearing to be in remarkably good spirits.

Some of the children rescued even had a typical kid's request at the hospital after being trapped without food for so long - bread with chocolate spread.

Two of the first group had a lung infection as well, and Thongchai said they would need medicine for seven days.

"The big heroes in this are the children and the four Thai Navy Seals who were looking after them", he told Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in a Skype call on Wednesday.

Australian divers have told of the dramatic rescue of 12 boys and their football coach trapped in a Thai cave system as each was passed "hand to hand" on stretchers between the rescuers to get them out.

"I hope today we will be faster or the same speed as yesterday", Narongsak said.

On Tuesday, Thailand's navy Seals, who were central to the rescue effort, said on their Facebook page that the remaining four boys and their 25-year-old coach were all brought out safely.

They are still being quarantined from their parents because of the risk of infection and would likely be kept in hospital for a week to undergo tests, officials said.

World leaders, including President Donald Trump, tweeted their good wishes, and the Manchester United football team invited the boys to their stadium.Nat Sumon reported from Chiang Rai, Thailand, and Alastair Jamieson from London.
