Liverpool close in on Shaqiri for bargain price

Liverpool transfer news Xherdan Shaqiri Man Utd

Stoke's relegation from the Premier League means Shaqiri's exit is a certainty and he is expected to line up with Liverpool's other new recruits, Naby Keita and Fabinho in the next two weeks.

Signed from Inter Milan by former Stoke manager Mark Hughes for £12m in August 2015, Shaqiri has openly admitted that he would look to leave after the club's drop into the Championship.

Liverpool began monitoring Shaqiri earlier in the summer and they are now holding discussions with Stoke about a move for the 26-year-old.

"Of course, I would like to play on the biggest stage in football".

Steven Gerrard suggests Sadiq Umar deal is close
The 21-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at NAC Breda in the Eredivisie, in which he netted five goals. Having broken into Roma's squad aged just 18, he's also scored twice for them in six senior appearances.

Meanwhile, Shaqiri has made it clear that his future lies in the Premier League, having said: "You are going to hear soon on my future".

The Swiss winger once again impressed for Switzerland at this summer's World Cup, but could ultimately do little to stop his country sliding out of the tournament at the hands of a plucky Sweden side in the round of 16. Liverpool got lucky last season in that their front three - Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah - remained fit and healthy for the majority of the campaign, but their lack of depth was exposed during the Champions League final, when Salah departed injured.

Liverpool may be able to sweeten any deal by offering a player on loan.

They could have him in place to travel to the USA where they will play Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Manchester United later this month.
