Man falls overboard from cruise ship off B.C. coast

The ship, the Seven Seas Mariner, is on its way back to Vancouver from Alaska and is scheduled to stop in Victoria later Tuesday.

The vessel was in USA waters, just north of Cape Flattery, at the northwestern tip of Washington state's Olympic Peninsula. He was pronounced dead at Olympic Medical Centre.

"We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim who were affected by this tragedy", said Capt. M.M. Balding, Sector Puget Sound Commanding Officer in a release.

A 1:30 p.m. call from the Carnival Vista brought a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from the Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater to the ship, which was 138 miles west of Great Inagua, Bahamas.

China raises tariffs on optical fiber materials
A ship carrying USA soybeans took off for China last week just before the Asian country's retaliatory tariffs went into effect. On Monday, China placed fees on a wide range of USA products, including scrap aluminum, sparkling wine and apples.

The man was last seen by his wife at 4 am who reported that she was woken up by "a breeze coming from the balcony door cracked open".

The ship's captain also confirmed to USCG that there is video footage showing the passenger "jumping" from the eighth-deck balcony at around 4:15 am.

The Coast Guard later said officials had no indication of what led the person to go overboard.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
