Harith Augustus, 37, was killed Saturday after a confrontation with officers, police said. According to patrol chief Fred Waller, Augustus broke free and ran from the officers, who believed "he appeared to be reaching for a weapon" and shot him. She told the paper that she saw the confrontation and said the officer told Augustus not to sell loose cigarettes.

Johnson says the gun was a semiautomatic handgun but that he's not sure what caliber. Officers claimed he appeared to be armed, and the released video appears to confirm their assessment, as it reveals a pistol and ammunition magazine tucked into his trousers.

The Chicago protests over Augustus' death turned violent on Saturday as police officers hit protestors with batons and shoved journalists covering the outcry.

Protests are planned at 5 p.m. Sunday in South Shore, the Chicago Tribune reported, about 24 hours after Augustus was killed.

The body cam video that was released does not have audio as there is a 30-second delay when the officer turns the device on.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson called the shooting a tragedy and said in a statement that it's a blessing Augustus didn't bring the girl with him Saturday, as he's known to do.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson chose to quickly disseminate the body camera video in the face of angry protests after the shooting.

Jackson called for video to be released and referenced footage from 2014 that showed a white officer shooting a black 17-year-old, Laquan McDonald, 16 times. Officers approached Augustus, a Black man, and an officer fired the fatal shots, Waller said.

At the time the Prime Minister's spokesman said: "If you watch the video, they're walking along and there is an unseen ramp". And he seems to do very well - I was just with him tonight, and I saw him with the Prime Minister sitting there.

The video shows several officers surrounding Augustus and asking him questions. Protestors reportedly threw rocks and bottles at police officers.

When they approached the man, he "started flailing and swinging away, trying to make an escape" and then "reached for the gun", Mr Waller said.

Protesters sparred with Chicago police officers following a deadly shooting on Saturday, July 13, 2018. Some people screamed "murderers" as officers lined up against them.

The man was shot multiple times, Guglielmi said.

Police in the nation's third-largest city released video Sunday that showed a man who was shot to death by an officer a day earlier had a firearm and tussled with officers before the shooting. One protester could be seen stomping on the hood of a police auto. He says the gun and the magazines have been sent for testing.

Four protesters were arrested in the clash, and some police officers suffered minor injuries.

Authorities haven't released the name of the man who died.

Augustus had no recent arrest history, Guglielmi said, without elaborating.
