Marvel Just Announced a BLACK WIDOW Movie

Cate Shortland Will Direct the Black Widow Movie

Marvel Studios' Black Widow movie is one step closer to happening, as the film has now set a director.

Shortland won the gig from a field of 49 candidates including Amma Asante (Belle), Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate), according to Deadline.

Shortland's hiring caps off months of searching that saw Marvel reportedly meet with as many as 75 different filmmakers for the project.

Shortland will be the first female director to singlehandedly direct a Marvel Studios movie. Shortland's credits include the World War II drama Lore from 2012 and the horror film Berlin Syndrome from past year.

Cate Shortland, who is best known for the 2012 World War II picture Lore, will helm the Scarlet Johansson-starring spinoff of the popular MCU character.

Argentina asks Russian Federation to arrest visiting Iran official over 1994 bombing
Iran has also made moves to align closer with China, with Velayati expected to visit Beijing in the near future, Reuters reports .

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has previously made a selling point out of the studio's meticulousness in choosing directors; In this case, it shows that they're not taking the business of making a Black Widow movie lightly.

Scarlett Johansson reprises her Avengers role of Natasha Romanoff in the upcoming Black Widow movie.

While she struggled after emerging as a filmmaker of great sensitivity and visual style with Somersault - later saying, "I just didn't want the attention" - Shortland has proven she is up for a challenge. Apparently, Marvel has already met with over 40 directors about the Black Widow job to date.

The film will be written by TiMER's Jac Schaeffer, and will reportedly be a prequel set before the events of the first Avengers movie.
