May stares down Brexit plan backlash as ministers quit

Her spokesman said she had welcomed the new members of her cabinet and they had discussed the publication of a white paper policy document on Britain's future ties with the European Union and stepping up preparations for any no-deal outcome to the negotiations with Brussels.

The Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, has already written to Mr Johnson and Mr Davis to thank them and has also written to the new Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab.

Certainly not what would be needed to make Theresa May's proposed third way for Brexit work as she now presents it.

Mrs May was forced to reshuffle roles in her cabinet following a series of resignations, including David Davis and Boris Johnson after the Priem Minister had agreed to a position on her Brexit model at Chequers last Friday.

But EU countries benefit more from keeping their club - the single market and customs union - intact, than they would do by compromising everything just for the sake of better bilateral relations with the United Kingdom after Brexit.

Under Conservative Party rules, a confidence vote in a leader can be triggered if 15 percent of Conservative lawmakers - now 48 - write a letter requesting one.

"The government now has a song to sing", he said.

The president of the European Council, Donald Tusk, said Europe was deeply troubled not by British cabinet resignations, but by Brexit itself.

If 48 Conservative MPs write letters of no confidence to the chair of the backbench 1922 committee, Graham Brady, she would face an immediate vote, but he made clear on Monday night that point had not been reached.

What to Expect in Supreme Court Confirmation Battle
Relishing the suspense, Trump insisted he still hadn't locked down his decision, which he wants to keep under wraps until a 9 p.m. Republicans control the Senate by a 51-49 majority, making any efforts by Democrats to thwart Trump's nominee an uphill battle.

This is because, even though these hardliners don't yet have the 48 signatures needed to call a vote on her leadership (and certainly not the 159 needed to actually oust her), May's cobbled-together majority in the House of Commons is so slim that even a handful of them could derail the process.

Matt Hancock replaced Hunt as health secretary, while Attorney General Jeremy Wright was appointed as minister of digital culture, media and sport, Hancock's old job.

Asked whether May would contest a no-confidence vote, a Downing Street source said simply: "Yes".

Less than nine months remain until Britain reduces the EU's membership on March 29, 2019.

It comes right before Donald Trump's first visit to Britain as USA president on Friday, as well as the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels tomorrow. But the mood in Brussels - especially after hearing this afternoon that Boris Johnson too was gone - is far from blasé.

Other pro-Brexit Cabinet ministers said they supported May and would not resign.

- How damaging is this to the Prime Minister? "The Prime Minister can't deliver Brexit and has zero authority left".

But the leader of the Scottish Conservatives Ruth Davidson said Mrs May was "correct to accept the Foreign Secretary's resignation". The UK government is in turmoil, but that has been the case for more than two years.

He flew out to Washington DC to convince Mr Trump that Iran would "go for a bomb" if he deserted the agreement, with his words falling on deaf ears as the USA later announced it would be pulling out of the deal.
