From this Saturday, Beccles and Lowestoft's Morrisons stores will join others around the country in introducing Quieter Hour, meaning no music or tannoy announcements, dimmed lights, reduced basket and trolley movement, and turned down volumes on self-service checkouts.

Daniel Cadey, from the National Autistic Society said: 'Around 700,000 people are on the autism spectrum in the UK.

Supermarket Morrisons has announced that it will be rolling out a nationwide weekly "Quieter Hour" to 493 of its stores.

The scheme has been rolled out to the supermarket's 493 United Kingdom stores following successful trials in Lincoln, Woking and Gainsborough earlier this year.

The company found one in five people had a friend or family member with autism and that many would appreciate the chance to shop in relative peace on Saturday mornings. Meanwhile, the Thistles Centre in Stirling said earlier this year that it would hold regular quiet hour events once a month ollowing a successful trial last October.

Morrisons supermarket in Hunslet is to introduce a quieter hour for customers who would benefit from a calmer shopping trip. This means they see, hear and feel the world differently to other people, often in a more intense way, which can make shopping a real struggle.

David Turvey at Morrisons Welwyn Garden City said: "Our initial trials showed there is a need for a quieter shopping experience".

The new scheme was created with help from the National Autistic Society, which says that some people living with autism can find being in a supermarket stressful due to sensory overload, such as loud noises and bright lights.

'We hope that these changes make a real difference for some of our customers at our store'.
