Multivitamins have no impact on heart health, researchers claim

Stop Taking Multivitamins to Help Your Heart. Researchers Say They Don't Work

Other research has found multivitamins have no influence on the risk of common cancers, cardiovascular disease or total mortality in postmenopausal women. Over two million subjects were evaluated, with an average follow-up duration of 12 years. Eleven of the studies were from the United States.

Backing up the findings, Dr Joonseok Kim, an assistant professor of cardiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said in a statement that the best way to defeat heart conditions was to live a tradtionally healthy lifestyle.

In the study, Kim and his colleagues reported that after accounting for both smoking histories and physical activity habits, they saw no evidence that taking a multivitamin or mineral supplements lowers the risk for dying from heart disease, experiencing a stroke, or dying from a stroke.

The researchers did find an association between the use of multivitamin and mineral supplements and a lower incidence of coronary heart disease. Most large-scale studies, however, have found no such benefit.

This means that the market, especially online, is flooded with "fake" medications and supplements.

Multivitamins are popular, but they don't appear to boost your heart health, according to a new study.

The findings of the new meta-analysis support the current supplement recommendations of the United States Preventive Services Task Forces (USPSTF) and the American Heart Association.

This Is the Most Tender Photo of the World Cup So Far
It was the first time England had reached a semi-final in the World Cup since 1990. There are a lot of things that have been hugely positive for us.

“People tend to prefer a quick and easy solution such as taking a pill [rather] than the more effortful method to prevent cardiovascular disease, ” he said.

But Americans have been stubbornly slow in accepting that message.

Back in May a massive meta-analysis comprising 179 different clinical trials concluded that most common vitamin supplements provided no health benefits.

"This systematic review mainly included healthy populations, meaning that if you consider yourself healthy with no history of disease and a well-balanced diet characterized by high intakes of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and fish, there is no reason to spend money on multivitamin supplements". The annual cost of these and other dietary supplements comes to more than $32 billion a year. "However recent guidelines suggest we all may wish to consider vitamin D supplementation, particularly during winter months", he said, when sunlight is scarce, as the vitamin is synthesized in the body through exposure to the sun.

Dr. Paul Offit of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, who criticizes the supplement industry in his book "Do You Believe in Magic?: The Sense and Nonsense of Alternative Medicine", notes that some supplements are harmful.

Doctors say the best way to stay heart healthy is to exercise, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and don't smoke.
