Mystery surrounds black granite sarcophagus found with alabaster head

Mysterious black sarcophagus is unearthed in Egypt and we don’t know who’s inside

The sarcophagus, which was discovered on July 1 during construction work, weighs around 30 tons, is nearly two metres high and three metres in length, and is the largest of its kind to be discovered in the ancient Egyptian city of Alexandria.

An antiquities ministry team was inspecting an area in the Sidi Gaber district of Alexandria before construction started for a new building when they discovered the sarcophagus.

In a Facebook post, Dr Mostafa Waziri, general secretary of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, announced that the 185cm-high sarcophagus, which is 265cm long and 165cm wide, is the largest ever found in Alexandria.

Head of the Projects Sector at the Ministry of Antiquities, Waad Abul-Ela, revealed the plan set to be used to lift the 30-ton archaeological sarcophagus to transfer it to one of Alexandria's archaeological sites. An alabaster head of a man was also found, most likely belonging to the owner of the tomb.

The city of Alexandria is through to have been founded by Alexander the Great in 332 BC. This recent finding has left experts baffled because it measures nine foot long and that they do not know who or what lies inside. Just me? Well, great news if you're me: a huge 2,000-year-old sarcophagus has been unearthed in Egypt and, so far, we have no idea what's inside it.
