New Jersey man could lose limbs after contracting flesh-eating bacteria

Man contracts flesh-eating bacteria while crabbing in NJ

After crabbing in a New Jersey river, a man caught a flesh-eating bacteria that is threatening his life and all of his limbs, according to reports.

Angel Perez, 60, went crabbing in Maurice River on July 2, according to KYW.

Larry Hajna, a spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, said, unfortunately, this type of bacteria is not uncommon for the waters.

Perez' family took him to the Cooper University Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition as doctors now work to save his four limbs, Fox 29 reported.

VNF is referred to as a flesh-eating bacteria because the infection results in tissue damage and death. Usually, it's contracted by eating raw shellfish, but it can also enter the body through an open wound or even a small scratch.

The National Institutes of Health says that while Vibrio bacteria "is one of the more infrequent causes of necrotizing fasciitis", it has a 26 percent mortality rate because it rapidly spreads and it is hard to diagnose.

Army vet and wife consider divorce to afford daughter's health care
The couple told the news station they fork out up to $15,000 out of pocket each year. Even with health insurance, the family spends $15,000 per year out of pocket.

"It turned brown, blackish in color", Dilena Perez-Dilan, Perez's daughter, told ABC 7. His daughter said they will see how he responds to treatment before considering amputation of at least three - or possibly all - of his limbs. Perez-Dilan said that doctors at the hospital are working to save her father's legs and arms - but that "the infection has spread to his blood". "If you see something that's out of the norm, go and get it checked". His forearms are black in color, they have blisters, cuts and sores'.

'She got antibiotics right away. Perez-Dilan said one of her father's friends and another family member developed rashes and swelling.

"We've all been praying and I think our spirituality, our religion, has been allowing us to get through without going into a chaotic mess", said Perez-Dilan. He's able to breathe on his own and communicate with his family, according to the outlet.

'He's been praising God nonstop. "Be careful. The water, as much as we need water, it can be poisonous".

She added, "He's just happy to have a second chance".
