New Wasp With Monstrous Sting Discovered Near Amazon Rainforests

Amazon Wasp with Enormous Stinger May Just Haunt Your Nightmares

Most of us have a healthy fear of wasps.

Wasps suck. Unlike many common species of bees, wasps (which are NOT bees) are often openly hostile, and sometimes they seem to pick a fight with you just for the fun of it.

An global team of researchers has discovered seven new wasp species belonging to the genus Clistopyga from Peru, Venezuela and Colombia.

The Clistopyga crassicaudata wasp flies softly and carries a big stinger.

Defending Wimbledon champion Federer ousted in quarter-finals
Djokovic is a three-time victor at Wimbledon, having won the title in 2011, 2014 and 2015. Either way, Dancer is eager to see how Anderson fares in his latest shot against Federer.

Scientists discovered a wasp whose stinger "looks like a fierce weapon".

"Parasitoid" wasp stingers have a dual objective. "It is the only species of the species-group with a strongly widened ovipositor (apically)", said Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, Professor in Biodiversity Research at the University of Turku, Finland, in an email to The Hindu. The wasp then lays its eggs on the spider and the larva eat the spider.

Clistopyga crassicaudata wasps find spider nests and then use their large stingers to paralyze spiders by injecting venom. The eggs are injected into its body and, as the spider rests in a hellish state of limbo, the eggs eventually hatch and the larva munches its way out of the spider's body from the inside.

The researchers aren't sure yet exactly which spider Clistopyga crassicaudata prefers to lay its eggs on, but hope to raise funding for further studies of the unusual insect and other parasitoid wasps in the Amazon.
