North Atlantic Treaty Organisation goes to emergency session after Trump reportedly gets undiplomatic with Merkel

Trump brands Germany a “captive of Russia,” days before he meets Putin

U.S. President Donald Trump gestures while speaking to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during their bilateral breakfast, Wednesday, July 11, 2018 in Brussels, Belgium.

In Saudi Arabia, the officials discussed United States oil sanctions to deny Iran revenue, maintaining a well-stocked oil market to guard against volatility and helping partners find alternatives to Iran oil, the official said. "And I am very happy that today we are united in freedom", Merkel said.

Sources familiar with the first round of closed-door talks on Thursday told the Reuters news agency that Mr. Trump carried his firm stance on military spending from Twitter into the meeting rooms.

"We are talking about trade, we have a very, very good relationship with the chancellor, we have a tremendous relationship with Germany", Trump said with Merkel sitting at his side.

In 2017, the United States spent 3.1 percent of its GDP on defense, while Estonia, Greece, Poland and the United Kingdom stand as the only countries which have crossed the two percent threshold.

President Trump discusses North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members' commitment to increase their defense spending.

In fact, Trump didn't just suggest he couldn't do anything to force the issue with Putin; he even seemed to acknowledge the possibility of concessions to Russian Federation.

Trump wrote in a second tweet, continuing a line of attack he opened Wednesday against Germany over its reliance on a gas pipeline from Russia: "On top of it all, Germany just started paying Russia, the country they want protection from, Billions of Dollars for their Energy needs coming out of a new pipeline from Russia".

Arsenal sign youngster Guendouzi from Lorient
The 19-year-old Frenchman arrives from Lorient with a high reputation after being courted by a number of major European clubs. A lot of great players have played here. "With pressure I feel fine, but with pressure on myself, I don't".

"We had a fantastic meeting at the end". And "they have pledged to spend more".

Trump would normally first need to win approval in the Senate and to persuade Republican senators that the move was necessary and in the US's long-term security interests. It would also be a boon to Russian Federation and its leader, Vladimir Putin, whom Trump will meet on Monday in Helsinki.

Ahead of his Monday meeting with Putin in Helsinki, Trump called the Russian president a "competitor" when asked if he considered Putin a friend or a foe. "Now this has been going on for decades, and it's very unfair to our country and to our taxpayer".

"He suggested that countries not only meet their commitment of 2 percent of their GDP on defense spending, but that they increase it to 4 percent", Sarah Sanders told reporters.

Trump has been more conciliatory behind the scenes, including at a leaders' dinner Wednesday.

The mood was already prickly ahead of the summit, prompting a terse exhortation from the European Union's President Donald Tusk for Trump to "appreciate" his allies and reminding him that Europe had come to its aid following the 9/11 attacks. "I hope we get along well".

At the contentious two-day summit that wrapped up Thursday, Trump intensified accusations that other nations in the 29-member alliance were not paying their fair share on defense.

Trump's next stop will be London, where he'll be meeting with Queen Elizabeth II and British Prime Minister Theresa May. "No country - not one - is delinquent". And one of the freedoms we have is freedom of speech and the freedom to express your views.
