North Atlantic Treaty Organisation states to increase defence funding

EU Council President Tusk addresses a news conference during an EU leaders summit in Brussels

"NATO is much stronger now than it was two days ago", Trump said.

As well as Merkel, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Charles Michel, the prime minister of Belgium, were singled out by Trump for undershooting on their spending targets when US taxpayers, funding a defence budget worth about 3.6 percent of their national income, foot much of NATO's bills.

Duda said he would be "shocked" if Trump made any move would decrease the region's security.

"There is value in protecting the president in having a number of Americans in the room when the conversations take place, because just what I saw on the scale of a congressional visit can happen in a presidential visit in which the description of what transpired in the meeting does not fit reality", Moran said.

Stoltenberg estimated European allies and Canada will add $266 billion to their military spending by 2024 and said, "this is really adding some extra momentum", apparently meaning Trump's pressure. In the afternoon, he heads to his next stop: the United Kingdom.

The spike in tensions comes as President Trump is preparing for his first-ever summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland, in less than a week, sparking worry among allies. "It's really extraordinary that Donald Trump has to be the person to point out that the emperor in Europe has no clothes".

The tone of their remarks contrasted with an earlier breakfast between Trump and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation chief Jens Stoltenberg, when the Republican president said Germany's reliance on Russian energy left it "in the control" of Moscow and Merkel later referred to her youth in Soviet-run East Germany to insist Berlin was now fully sovereign.

President Trump Says Pfizer Has Agreed to Reverse Drug 'Price Hikes'
Across the industry, Wells Fargo found, companies rose drug prices on 63 products and lowered prices on 64 products in June. Five weeks ago, Trump said that drugmakers would announce "voluntary, massive" cuts in drug prices in two weeks.

Trump took his war of words with America's allies to a new level Wednesday, telling NATO's top official that Germany is "captive" to Russian Federation due to a recent energy deal.

Throughout his presidency, Trump has railed against European allies for not paying more for the defenses and becoming too dependent on the United States.

EU President Donald Tusk stepped up to the fight with his own salvo against Trump on Tuesday, telling him to "appreciate your allies" and reminding him Washington that Europe had come to its aid following the 9/11 attacks.

Amid the tumult, British Prime Minister Theresa May, whose government is in turmoil over her plans for exiting the European Union, sounded a call for solidarity among allies.

While he has said in recent days that allies are "delinquent", and should reimburse the US for spending, each country contributes money to its own defense budget, not toward the alliance or any one country.

In 2017, the United States spent 3.1 percent of its GDP on defense, while Estonia, Greece, Poland and the United Kingdom stand as the only countries which have crossed the two percent threshold.

"We had a very intense summit", Merkel told reporters after the session.

Nonetheless, he has simultaneously asserted that the USA should pay less.
