North Atlantic Treaty Organisation turns its focus on Afghanistan after Trump's harsh criticism day before

Donald Trump takes the fight to NATO

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, left, talks to U.S. President Donald Trump as British Prime Minister Theresa May, right watches at the opening ceremony of the NATO summit at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Hannity blasted several North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member states for failing to even come close to the two percent standard or 3.5 percent that the United States contributes.

A White House spokeswoman said his remarks came as he was urging leaders to increase their outlays on defence and were not a formal proposal.

It followed an uncomfortable first round at the summit where anxious Western allies were subjected to the USA president's "America first" approach.

Trump continued the attack through the day after first raising it at a breakfast meeting.

Praising new initiatives to build capacity, NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg estimated that as much as 266 billion additional US dollars would be spent by European allies and Canada on defense by 2024.

"Putin has tried to create other alternative pipelines that would essentially tie up eastern European countries, make them dependent on Russian Federation, just the way he did [with] Ukraine when he shut off their fuel in the middle of a cold winter", Ambassador Lincoln Bloomfield (Ret.) told FOX Business' David Asman.

United States trade war fears weigh on markets as South Korea sounds alarm
The Office of the US Trade Representative proposed 10 per cent tariffs Tuesday on a list of 6031 Chinese product lines. China "cannot match fresh US tariffs", Vishnu Varathan of Mizuho Bank said in a report.

He said that German Chancellor Angela Merkel runs the nation that is the "de facto leader of the EU" and that its failure to "properly fund NATO" should be criticized.

Hitting back at Mr Trump's "captive of Russia" comments, Mrs Merkel said afterwards that having experienced life in Soviet-controlled former East Germany, she was glad her country could now "determine our own policies and make our own decisions". Trump tweeted an hour before the second day of the summit got under way. A source close to Macron said Trump had voiced his "personal attachment" to Europe and gave "rather positive and constructive messages" to his allies. "For many years I dreamed of freedom, just as many others did - also of the freedom to travel to the United States", she said then.

It was the most recent in a series of demands and insults that critics fear will undermine the decades-old alliance, coming days before Trump sits down with Putin at the conclusion of his closely watched European trip.

"Yesterday I let them know that I was extremely unhappy with what was happening", Trump said, adding that, in response, European countries agreed to up their spending.

Trump was objecting to Germany's acceptance of a new pipeline project that will bring more natural gas from Russian Federation. "On top of that, Germany is just paying a little bit over 1 percent [on defense]... and I think that is inappropriate also", Trump said. "Must pay 2% of GDP IMMEDIATELY, not by 2025". US Turkish relations have recently been strained because of issues ranging from Syria to Iran, but some diplomats say the two leaders - both criticised for their polarising politics - have established a bond.

'All President Trump is doing is pointing out of hard facts and the hard truth and saying hey look we are going to change this.
