Nuts in your diet helps improve sperm count and motility

Want stronger, healthier sperm? Eat your nuts

Study regarding the influence of nuts, goes hand in hand with other works, talking about the positive impact of omega-3, antioxidants and vitamin b fertility.

Salas-Huetos presented the work at the annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Barcelona this week.

The study recorded not just sperm parameters, but also changes in several molecular factors, including sperm DNA fragmentation.

Although these are statistically significant results from a randomised trail with a high level of scientific evidence, Salas-Huetos emphasised that subjects in the study were all healthy and apparently fertile men following a western-style diet.

About one in seven couples have difficulty getting pregnant and about 40-50% of cases of infertility are attributable to men.

Researchers based in Spain arrived at their conclusion by recruiting 119 healthy young men aged between 18 to 35.

Although the findings support hopeful fathers adding nuts to their diets, the researchers stress the study was carried out on healthy men who ate a western diet and therefore the results may not apply to all.

China vows retaliation as trade war starts
A half-hour before noon in Beijing, the ship was passing South Korea's Jeju Island - close but not quite cutting it. Chinese manufacturers have already been hit by a strengthening yuan that has made exports more expensive.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), normal sperm concentration for male fertility is greater than 15 million per millilitre with a progressive motility of 32 percent or higher, vitality of 58 percent and a normal morphology of 4 percent or more.

Nuts are rich in many of these nutrients. Sperm as well as blood samples were tested for the participants. Indeed, it was this change in the level of DNA fragmentation in the sperm cells that the investigators explained, at least in part, the improvement in sperm count, motility and morphology.

So, should men who want children add nuts to their diets? Reduction in DNA fragmentation was the main reason why the other parameters also improved he said.

Maybe, says study author and nutrition expert Albert Salas-Huetos.

Morphology - the size and shape of sperm - increased by 1 percent.

"The fact that the study has taken place is good", said Virginia Bolton, a consultant embryologist at Guy's and St Thomas's hospital in London, "but we need to see this translated into an effect on fertility".

"But evidence is accumulating in the literature that healthy lifestyle changes such as following a healthy dietary pattern might help conception - and of course, nuts are a key component of a Mediterranean healthy diet".
