Cleveland Indians bolster bullpen by getting Brad Hand

The San Diego Padres are trading All-Star closer Brad Hand to the Indians, sources told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Robert Murray on Thursday. Cleveland sent prized catching prospect Francisco Mejia back to San Diego in the trade.

The AL Central-leading Indians bolstered a bullpen that has struggled this season with Andrew Miller dealing with injuries.

The Indians' bullpen was excellent last season, but this season has been a different story.

UK Employment At Record, Pay Growth Slows
But he added: "It is important to remember that unemployment remains, by historical standards, at a low rate". Average earnings increased by 2.5% in the year to May, compared with 2.4% the previous month.

The Indians lost relievers Joe Smith and Brian Shaw to free agency, but the holdovers have struggled as well. Hand has 24 saves in 29 opportunities this season with a 3.05 ERA. Dan Otero's ERA has skyrocketed from 2.85 to 5.60. He has struck out 65 batters in only 44 1/3 innings.

Cimber is 27 years old but in his first season in the big leagues. He has impressed with a 3.17 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 48 1/3 innings. In 77 games for the Columbus Clippers (Indians Triple A), Mejia hit.279 with 21 doubles, seven home runs and 43 RBIs.

The cost for present and future relief help is Mejia, who is widely regarded as one of the best prospects in baseball. Keith Law ranked him fifth on his midseason top-50 list, noting he should be a regular at catcher due to his arm, receiving skills, and bat.
