Porte on the up after BMC’s time trial win

Peter Sagan is happy to be back at the Tour after being kicked out early in 2017

Defending champion Chris Froome, who lost 51 seconds to some of his main rivals after crashing on Saturday, had an uneventful day on the bike and finished safely in the peloton. "It's part of the game unfortunately", said Froome, who went down with about 5 kilometres to go as the sprinters' teams jockeyed for position. "We're on track but there's still so much to go through".

"There was bad news for one of his rivals as well with Nairo Quintana picking up a puncture on an eventful start to the Tour with the Movistar rider ending 1'11" behind the leaders as result. It would have been nice not to have lost it in the first place.

At his post-race media conference, Gaviria added: "It's been an awesome day, I've dreamt of this victory and the possibility of taking the yellow jersey. I'm just grateful I'm not injured in any way and there is still a lot of road to follow before we get to Paris".

After that, the gaps became more significant. In the intermediate sprint, Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) took a second and increased his advantage in the GC fight.

"We rode out of our skin and super smooth and with the horsepower that we have did a great ride", the Irishman said.

Romain Bardet is now behind the two, meanwhile, as Ag2r-La Mondiale failed to break the 40-minute mark - team time trialling not being their forte.

There was a festive family atmosphere on the mainly coastal route, which was well marshaled by a massive police presence that organizers hope will deter fans targeting Froome, who was only cleared to race last week after long-running suspicions of doping were put to bed.

Pickford has made 'rare saves' in England run - Campos
We'll do our best to try keep him quiet, but everybody else as well, because they have a lot of threats from different areas. Pickford, 24, has impressed football fans as he helps the England team get that little bit closer to the World Cup final.

Midway around the course first Luke Rowe and then Wout Poels dropped off the back of their train, and it perhaps proved key as BMC carried more speed through the second half of the course.

"Without the leak we wouldn't even know about it, but that's the nature of the sport now", the 2012 Tour victor said on Eurosport's The Bradley Wiggins Show. "Make sure all the guys are right, forget the race and live the moment", he said of how they tackled the challenge.

"It's a flawless day, I was a bit scared because Sonny was coming back strong", said Sagan, who also wore the yellow jersey in 2016. Smith was focussed on winning the climber's polka dot jersey, and once he had secured that after the only classified climb came early in the stage, he was called back to the bunch to help his team.

Sky are among a clutch of favourites to win Monday's stage, where they will hit around 50km/h over the slightly rolling course but will be easily identified. "It just shows that we are here, too, and let's get it on".

Had the team not lost so much in the team time trial, he perhaps could have won the race overall. "Close but not quite quick enough".

For Porte, the stage win took on special significance as it marked a year since he crashed out of last year's Tour on the decent into Chambery on the ninth stage.
