Province drops sex ed curriculum, drawing fire and praise in Windsor

Area MPP leading Tory rollback of Ontario sex-ed curriculum

Ontario's new Progressive Conservative government is pledging to cut taxes, provide long-term funding for the health-care system and slash government waste in a throne speech that emphasizes promises made by Premier Doug Ford during the spring election campaign.

NDP legislator Peter Tabuns said even in the early days of the new Tory government they're not being open about their work.

The government also laid out its plan to expand the sale of beer and wine to convenience stores, grocery stores and big-box stores, and to roll back restrictions on police officers, calling the measures a show of respect for consumers and law enforcement, respectively.

While running for office, Mr. Ford repeatedly vowed that his first act as Premier would be to fire CEO Mayo Schmidt and the board of Hydro One.

Ford has already said that his government will run a deficit in its first, second and possibly third year before returning to black.

Nets trade Lin to Hawks
According to Wojnarowski, however, league sources said they expect the Hawks to now trade Schroder this offseason. Faried, 28, played in 32 games (seven starts) for Denver last season, averaging 5.9 points and 4.8 rebounds.

Along with legislating an end to cap-and-trade, Mr. Smith said the Tories will work to prevent a future government from imposing a carbon price in Ontario. "If you are a young person who is struggling with their gender identity, determining who you are for the first time as you explore your sexuality, you will not be somebody who is well served by this government as indicated in this throne speech".

"These three priorities send a clear and serious message about what you can expect from our government", said Smith. The speech was vague about how it would pay for the enhancements to health care, but the government has promised to find efficiencies through a Commission of Inquiry and the audit of government books. In its rare summer sitting, Queen's Park will move back-to-work legislation to end a strike that has been continuing at York University since March.

"If you are going to change direction it needs to be done in a responsible way to mitigate financial risks for Ontarians", said Schreiner.

The sex-ed curriculum will be replaced with one that is based on "real" consultations with parents, the speech says. "It's inflammatory to things that aren't in the curriculum", he said.

University of Toronto political science professor Nelson Wiseman said Ford, who led the party to a sweeping majority, is capitalizing on his momentum.
