Putin-Trump summit gets underway

Warner wants more Americans in Trump-Putin meeting

President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a joint news conference following their summit in Finland.

The US and Russian presidents may swap compliments at their first summit in Helsinki on Monday, but they are deeply divided on issues including Syria, Ukraine and alleged Russian election-meddling. They grew even worse following the 2016 USA presidential election, which resulted in Washington slapping Russian Federation with numerous rounds of sanctions. Trump lamented that years of American "foolishness and stupidity", and now Robert Mueller's probe, have insulted our friends in Moscow.

"Nothing bad's gonna come out of it, and maybe some good will come out", Trump said.

Trump said in an interview with CBS over the weekend that he "hadn't thought" of raising a longshot extradition request with Putin, but indicated he would ask about it.

The US President commented he wanted to improve the relations with Putin, while the Russian leader the said there a "lot of issues in the world".

"They're paying and they're paying more rapidly and I think North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has never been stronger than it is today", said Trump referring to defense spending commitments tied to a minimum percentage of the gross domestic product of the alliance's member states. He told CBS News past year that he can't get meetings with USA officials in D.C.

Trump tweeted hours before the meeting.

CBS News' Margaret Brennan reports that Hill, a Putin biographer and former intelligence office, is clear eyed in terms of the current threat Russian Federation poses to the USA and was given a prominent position at the summit on Monday by Bolton deliberately.

Addressing reporters before the one-on-one meeting, Putin struck a casual pose during Trump's remarks, slouching in his chair with his legs wide and eyes low.

"My people came to me, Dan Coats came to me, some others, they said they think it's Russia", Trump said at the news conference.

"Frankly, we have not been getting along very well for the last number of years [.] I think we will end up having an extraordinary relationship", Trump said.

In an interview yesterday with CBS News Trump was asked to describe the US's biggest foes - and the first on the list was the European Union - before going on to name Russian Federation and China.

The president also told CBS News in an interview that he "hadn't thought" about asking Putin to extradite the dozen Russian military intelligence officers indicted this past week in Washington on charges related to the hacking of Democratic targets in the 2016 U.S. election.

Trump has made comments in the past about the European Union and continued to name Russian Federation and China as opponents in particular arenas of national activity.

"I would rather take a political risk in pursuit of peace than to risk peace in pursuit of politics", he said.

Trump also praised Putin for holding the World Cup, which ended Sunday.

Gowdy is not the only Republican to criticize Russian Federation in the run-up to Monday's meeting.
