Palestinians to keep paying prisoner stipend despite Israeli penalty

Israel has repeatedly called out Abbas and his government for paying stipends to Palestinian prisoners and "martyrs" involved with deadly attacks on Israelis, accusing the PA of encouraging Palestinians to commit violence against Israelis.

Also on Friday, a Palestinian man, 22, was killed and dozens injured by Israeli troops as Palestinian protesters demonstrated on the border with Israel near Gaza City, the Palestinian Maan news agency reported.

But, Abbas affirmed to his party that the Palestinian Authority would continue to pay "our martyrs and prisoners and wounded people" as it had since 1965, despite the slash to hundreds of millions of dollars in funding. They say that the tax revenue collected by Israel for them under past peace agreements is their money and that the Palestinian Authority has a responsibility to all of its citizens like any other government.

On July 2 the Israeli parliament voted 120-87 to withhold approximately US$330 million in annual tax revenues - the amount that would typically go toward this stipend during the 2018 fiscal year.

Apple squashes bug that caused Taiwan to crash iPhones
Apple has since moved to squash the bug, and as a result, typing Taiwan into iMessage on an iPhone in China doesn't crash it. The filter, apparently, was to block the flag and name of Taiwan from users in the heavily-censored mainland China.

Meanwhile, Abbas reiterated the Palestinian rejection to the Israeli decision of cutting the PA fund, or allowances the PA pays to the families of the prisoners and those killed by Israel in the Palestinian territories. Abbas said other Arab countries also have rejected the USA plan, but didn't say which countries opposed the plan.

He added that "countries in the world, in Europe, Asia and Africa started to realise that the deal of the century will not pass", in reference to the peace plan Trump administration is intending to declare soon. "We are watching and are waiting and we will take the appropriate measures that suit our interest".

At least 17 fires were sparked on Israeli land near the Gaza border by incendiary kites and balloons launched from Gaza by Palestinian protesters.
