Researchers film glacier calving massive iceberg in Greenland

Scientists have managed to capture on film the moment a huge iceberg breaks away from a glacier in eastern Greenland.

Earth's biggest glaciers are in frozen Antarctica, and their breakup would be catastrophic for sea level rise; the loss of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet would release enough water to raise global sea levels by almost 10 feet (3 meters).

According to the latest predictions, if the Western Antarctic Ice Sheet collapsed it could cause global sea levels to rise by ten feet, overwhelming coastal cities around the world like NY and Abu Dhabi.

The calving event captured on video began on June 22 at 11:30 p.m. local time and continued for approximately 30 minutes but the video sums up the whole event in just 90 seconds.

The resulting iceberg, broken off from Greenland's Helheim Glacier, would stretch from lower Manhattan up to Midtown in New York City.

‘Goosebumps 2’ trailer invites you to a very ‘Haunted Halloween’
The first trailer for Goosebumps: Haunted Halloween has finally arrived, and it brings the ghastly thrills and ghoulish chills. The first film made $156.7 million on a $58 million budget, and hit #1 on the sales charts when it was released on home video.

"Knowing how come icebergs are important for modelling, because the icebergs ultimately determine global sea-level rise". The video shows a 6.4-km-long iceberg that breaks off from the glacier and goes to sea.

When large masses of ice part from glaciers, quantities of water are shunted into the ocean and contribute to sea-level rise. "The better we understand what is happening, the more precisely we can predict and plan for climate change", explains an employee at NY University, Denise Holland. It's a tabular iceberg, long and flat; in the video, you can also see tall, thin pinnacle icebergs crack off and flip over. The latest calving event also suggests that ice sheet melting is taking place with increased strength and at a speed that no models have predicted before.

In April this year, New York University received a $2.1 million, five-year grant from the National Science Foundation to better understand Antarctic glaciers and the forces behind sea-level rise. The research is focused on the Thwaites Glacier.

"Global sea-level rise is both undeniable and consequential", said research team leader David Holland in a statement.
