Scientists: a New infection that is sexually transmitted, causes infertility

A little-known but increasingly common sexually-transmitted infection could become the next superbug, experts have warned. This is reported by foreign media.

The British Association of Sexual Health and HIV says that the infection is often mistaken for other sexually transmitted infections with similar symptoms, meaning that patients are given...

"MG is rapidly becoming the new superbug: it's increasingly resistant to most of the antibiotics we use to treat chlamydia and changes its pattern of resistance during treatment so it's like trying to hit a moving target", Dr Peter Greenhouse, sexual health consultant from the United Kingdom, said in a statement.

Thousands of women could become infertile every year thanks to an increasingly risky sexually-transmitted infection spread by people having unsafe sex on holiday. The infection is a bacteria that in men, causes inflammation of the urethra and in women, can cause inflammation of the reproductive organs (womb and fallopian tubes), causing pain during sex and some bleeding. The bacteria can live in the urinary and genital tracts of men and women, which allows it to be passed on sexually. Experts have warned that if it continues to become resistant to antibiotics, it can become a full-blown superbug causing infertility in more than 3,000 women.

Other symptoms for men and women include discharge and dysuria (painful or hard urination). It can also be treated by an antibiotic called macrolides, however there are concerns the infection is reportedly developing resistance to this.

Cash-strapped NHS services are misdiagnosing the MG infection because of a lack of testing kits which cost just £4 ($5.30) each, reports Mirror UK.

Croatia's Rakitic promises 'excess energy' for final
We do not have the appropriate environment with big teams [in Croatia], but we have great players, who have brought us such joy. We want to try [to] finish on a high on Saturday and if given the chance, I'll relish it and enjoy it".

What is Mycoplasma Genitalium (MG)? "We both sensibly got tested and declared clean at the start of the relationship but GUM [genitourinary medicine] clinics don't test for MG, unless you have symptoms".

Peter Greenhouse, a sexual consultant in Bristol and BASHH member, advised that people be more cautious by using condoms.

Dr Paddy Horner, consultant senior lecturer in sexual health at Bristol University and one of the authors of the new guidelines, said: "This is not curing the infection and is causing antimicrobial resistance in MG patients".

"It's yet another good reason to pack the condoms for the summer holidays and actually use them", he advised.

A survey carried out by BASHH revealed that only one in 10 public health commissioners in England plan to provide testing for the infection within the next year. "We call on the government urgently to this funding available and on sexual health experts to ensure they implement these new guidelines", she said, according to the Telegraph.
