Sen. Warner asks intelligence chief if Trump's North Korea claims are true

S. Korea approves rare screening of N. Korea films

The letter made no mention of North Korea's plans to denuclearize.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un (4th R) and President Donald Trump (3rd L) attend a working lunch with their respective delegations at their historic US-North Korea summit, at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island, June 12, 2018, in Singapore.

Roh Kyu-deok, a spokesman for South Korea's Foreign Ministry, said the South Korean government is "constantly in contact with the USA counterpart" about progress of the talks on war remains repatriation, but declined to comment on any details, saying that all inquiries on the issue be directed to the US authorities.

During Pompeo's recent trip, meant to negotiate the details of the nuclear agreement signed during the Trump-Kim summit in Singapore, North Korea called denuclearization demands by the USA "gangster-like".

The top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee has asked the head of US intelligence to assess whether North Korea's posture and actions regarding denuclearization match up with the Trump administration's claims.

At high-level talks last week, North Korea and the US confirmed they are still poles apart on the next steps to be taken in the process. But it didn't commence at the scheduled time as North Korean officials didn't show up. "Looking round farm machines and tractors of the workteam, he acquainted himself with how many tractors it has and how it operates them", KCNA reports.

North Korea's failure to show up to the meeting follows a tempestuous week in the ongoing denuclearization talks with Washington. The discussions about returning Americans soldiers killed nearly 70 years ago was perhaps the most tangible outcome from Pompeo's trip, which analysts expected would at least secure the release of some remains.

When Trump announced the United States would halt joint military drills with South Korea, he backed his controversial move by citing the "tremendous" costs of such exercises.

Pompeo made his first overnight visit to Pyongyang last week to discuss a specific definition for denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, which for America would require the complete elimination of the North Korean nuclear program.

The USFK sent 100 wooden cases to the truce village of Panmunjeom to receive the remains last month, and also has 158 coffins ready at a base in Pyeongtaek to take the remains back to the U.S.

Trump tweeted images of the letter, dated July 6, both in Korean and translated into English. The Pentagon did not confirm this claim.

There is speculation that North Korea may also want payment for the return of the remains, our correspondent says.
