Spieth part of 3-way tie for British lead as Woods lurks

Rory Mc Ilroy climbed into contention despite rain and cold in Carnoustie Friday

For 20 minutes on a warm Saturday afternoon at the British Open, Tiger Woods's name was back atop a leaderboard at a major championship and Carnoustie was buzzing.

Molinari is mindful of an expected change in the weather conditions for the last day, with the wind that can be so damaging in these parts finally expected to make its presence felt.

"We've got pretty much a new tournament tomorrow".

Jordan Spieth put himself in prime position to defend his British Open championship Saturday by surging into a share of the 54-hole lead on a day when Tiger Woods shot into contention.

The words he uttered after shooting a second consecutive 69 in the British Open on Friday at Carnoustie to stand at 4-under par and two shots out of the lead shared by Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner through 36 holes spoke to all of us who love sports.

Schauffele, the PGA Tour rookie of the year last season, holed a 30-foot putt from behind the 18th green for a 67.

He recalls sitting behind the green and thinking "how hard it was going to be for Sergio [Garcia] to make par on the toughest finishing hole in golf". "It was like a £9 haircut and I tipped them".

Canada's Adam Hadwin shot 1-over (71) and sits tied for 51st heading into Sunday.

And for the first time, all of them get to experience a final round at a major with Woods in the hunt. He made six birdies and his only mistake was a bogey on the 16th, where he left his first putt from off the green short. But it was there.

"Hopefully I've got my best stuff on the weekend", the 2012 Open runner-up and 2013 Masters champion said.

Woods took more risks off the tee today than he has all week, and it clearly paid off. Carding only one bogey, he shot in the 60s in The Open for the first time since 2007.

Rory Mc Ilroy shot 69 to climb to four under at halfway in the Open

"I can't lie, if I could pick one tournament in my life to win, it would be the Open", he said. I've got a chance at this, which is great.

Woods is five-under on his third round thru 12 holes to get within one of the lead.

The red-hot Francesco Molinari then, with about a thousandth of the fanfare, went one better than Woods with his own imperious 65 to raise the bar to six under. He'd never again pull closer than two shots. They all dropped shots on a day when there was no time to be going backward.

Woods then fired a handsome second shot into the 10th hole, one of the finest shots of the tournament so far.

It was a mis-firing day for McIlroy, pictured inset, as he signed for a 70, dropping two shots in the last three holes.

There were plenty of mistakes around the course from the leaders, but his 5-over 76 was the worst round from players who finished in the top 25.

'How about I just send it?'

There's every chance that players sizing up their shots on the nearby first tee would have heard him!

Pepperell teed off at 11.40 a.m. local time with Phil Mickelson.

"I got a couple of good breaks but I wouldn't say I drew on anything except the adjustments I've made during the week in my game to feel more comfortable over the ball".

Woods even had luck on his side at the 18th, when his drive landed a foot away from the Barry Burn only to bounce away from the water to the relative safety of the long grass - he then salvaged a par after a tremendous approach shot. He's the real deal, and likely going to be a major champion sooner rather than later.

McIlroy, Rose, Schauffele and Kisner finished in a tie for second place as the world's oldest major championship avoided a fourth straight playoff at Carnoustie to determine the Champion Golfer of the Year.
