Suspect Arrested In Alleged Racist Attack On Elderly Mexican Man

L.A. elderly man who was brutally beaten with brick thanks witness

Authorities have arrested a California woman accused of beating of a 91-year-old man on the Fourth of July, for what witnesses said could've been a xenophobic assault. But Rodriguez denies ever bumping into the little girl and says he was beaten with a concrete block.

Detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department arrested 30-year-old Laquisha Jones in the attack late Tuesday and booked her into jail for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon.

Rodriguez, who is recovering at his relatives' Willowbrook home south of Los Angeles, said he was walking to a park on July 4 when he passed a woman and a girl. He was out for his daily walk when the woman attacked him for no reason, Rodriguez told CNN.

"I'll leave it to the law", he said in Spanish. I don't know where her heart is at.

Passerby Misbel Borjas told CNN she was nearly hit by a block while attempting to film the attack, and heard a woman say, "go back to your country, go back to Mexico". "Go back to Mexico".

The woman also told Rodriguez to "go back to your country", Borjas said, according to NBC Los Angeles.

The newspaper notes that Rodriguez, who is a legal US citizen, was released from the hospital and has been recovering at home.

He spent five or six hours in a hospital, his family said. "And when the guys came, they hit him in the face, his body, everything", the witness said.

"But that's not true", he told CNN about the woman's allegation, through tears. "I've never asked for bad things to happen".

Earlier, the department said it was looking for a woman seen in a photo that Borjas had taken. The witness said the woman and several men beat Rodriguez, at times using what appeared to be a brick or a piece of concrete. She captured the incident on video shared with KTLA-TV, which shows Rodriguez with blood running down his face. "She took a block of concrete and hit him in his head many times". Police are also trying to figure out if more individuals were involved in the assault.

A GoFundMe campaign started by Rodiguez's family to pay for his medical expenses had raised $248,307 - far exceeding the $15,000 goal - as of Wednesday morning.

"How can you hurt a 92-year-old man?" He recalled the attack while lying back in a reclining chair at his relatives' Willowbrook home.

Erik Mendoza, Mr Rodriguez's grandson, found his grandfather later that evening, bloodied and bruised on the street and unable to walk.
