Tour de France 2018 - Geraint Thomas wins Stage 11, takes yellow jersey

Greg Van Avermaet extended his lead in the yellow jersey with a brilliant fourth-place finish

One of the big talking points to come out of Stage 12 of the Tour de France 2018 was the impact of roadside supporters on the race.

But the Welshman and teammate Chris Froome were met by a chorus of boos and jeers at the finish as Team Sky's domination of the race continued.

Thomas, who took the yellow jersey when he won Wednesday's 11th stage, prevailed again in the 12th at top of the 21-hair-pinned climb, one of the most iconic of the Tour. He got up and finished the stage but abandoned the race after scans at Grenoble hospital revealed a fractured vertebrae for the Italian.

Thomas accelerated in the last stretch to beat Dutchman Tom Dumoulin and France's Romain Bardet who were second and third, two and three seconds behind respectively.

The 109 km stage from Albertville to La Rosière Espace San Bernardo was the second stage of the tour to take place in the Alps, following yesterday's finish in Le Grand Bornard. I'm sorry about him.

We've seen this before on the Tour de France, but it never fails to thrill - a cyclist jumping over the peloton.

Thomas now looks every inch a potential Tour victor, yet he still maintains Froome is Team Sky's designated leader and that he has not targeted final victory. If I'm struggling, I'm not going to expect him to wait for him.

EU, Japan sign major trade deal in message against protectionism
Apart from its deal with the EU, Japan is working on other trade agreements, including a far-reaching trans-Pacific deal. Abe was predominantly referring to the protectionist trade policies being pushed by US President Donald Trump .

With questions over which rider Sky is backing for victory, it was a bold demonstration of strength by Thomas, who has been Froome's loyal lieutenant for years.

'I can't believe it, ' Thomas said of his second stage win in 48 hours.

"It's just mental. I just can't believe I won the stage". 'I'm not sure what happened to Nibali, ' he said.

In the jousting that preceded the final sprint to the summit, Dumoulin noted that Froome attacked while Thomas stayed on Dumoulin's wheel.

Thomas broke from his Team Sky teammates with 5.5 km to go, with teammate and 2017 Tour de France victor Chris Froome following in pursuit.

The three-week race ends July 29 in Paris..
